Hi-ho,

Tim from work:

We were using a white paper backdrop for formal headshots, pinned to a large red pinboard. I took down the paper, as the red matched Tim's shirt quite well, and changed the lighting setup.

Any and all comments welcome.

Cheers, Chris H.

Nice job. I like that background with his shirt too. It does go well. I think the lighting in front of him is nice but the shadows on the left are dark, esp. on this face. I would like to see even lighting on his face. Unless of course you were going for the dark half. I think you did well.

I would definitely prefer the face to be more uniformly lit. The left is too dark - and loses much detail.

I like the complimentary background - good composition.

Would like to see the first set with the white background to see the different lighting you tried.

I like the quality of the light, the expression and pose of the model.

However, the model's right side, particularly his eye needs a little more light. Something about the lighting imbalance between his eyes throws off the groove a little.

Good quality shot though, I really like the tones in the image.

Thanks folks...

I was going for the dark and mysterious look, but agree that I might have gone a little too far with the dark part of that :-).

Here's one of the white background ones, which is for using as an ID photo. This is a more conventional shot with the two brollys at 45 degrees off center, and the left side only 1 stop down from the key (right). A third flash with a small softbox is covering the white paper backdrop. No editing done on this one.

The red one was 3 stops difference, with the key light slightly behind on the right, with fill at maybe 30 degrees off center. I had a third flash sitting on the aircon unit near the ceiling on the left for a hair light, 2 stops down. Editing on the red one was spot editing out the brackets that held a white board on the wall, and a seam in the fabric. Then USM'd his eyes, and a slight overall curves adjustment.

Cheers, Chris H.
