If you have the bandwidth and want to see something pretty amazing, download the sample image on this page. It is an 11.5MB direct-from-camera JPEG taken with Canon's new 1Ds Mark II.
After it downloads, look at the detail present in the image around her nose. You can see individual hairs! The pores of the skin are also readily apparent. This was taken with the 85mm/1.8 lens (not even an L lens; $320 from B&H) and the detail from this portrait shot results in macro-like detail. Wow. I'm just blown away! There is no noise or moiré to speak of either!

It's a great image, love her expression! But I have to tell ya, digital cams (even the cheapy little ones) are notorious for picking up those little details - like hairs, enlarged pores, all sorts of gross stuff that film graciously ignores.
The old olympus 2mp that I used last year did the same thing - captured every hair and imperfection. It was, to say the least, kinda gross. Esp. when looking at self-portraits.
Anyway, that's a great shot of her :-) |

Yeah, pretty amazing, 11.5MB JPG file!!! You`ll need those new 8GB CF cards for that camera, lol. Michael Reichman od Luminous Landscape is going to publish a review of the 1Ds on his site next week. He spent a week in Spain shooting with it, should be interesting.

Wow! You're absolutely right. this is fantastic quality! Just as I was getting accustomed to how much I needed to save to get the 1D (not 's'!) mark II, now you show me this!!!?
(But, yes, ..it may be peach fuzz, but her nose definitely needs a shave.)

Simply stunning! What a machine. If money was no object, I'd be sooo there. Full frame, what a joy that would be, to have wide angle again!
I can't for the life of me though understand why the very cool white balance. Makes her look like a ghost. I warmed it up just a touch and it looks much better to me.

Notice that the noise is very film-like. There's no banding patterning in it. What a camera...

rami,
Banding is non-random fixe-pattern noise that on Canon DSLRs tends to appear as faint horizontal bands. There is some faint banding in the ISO 3200 image, but it is not too bad. Here's a 50% crop (1280x1280 resized to 640x640) of an area of the ISO32oo shot. You should be able to see faint bands.
I don't know if any fixed-pattern noise reduction was done to those images...

When I looked again I saw that there was some, but it's so much better than the previous cameras (I admittedly haven't looked at the 1D Mk II images closely). I would think that it would be less noticeable in prints, too.
