would creating a photo negative with my photo editing software violate the basic editing rule?...despecle,sharpen,satration,contrast,brightness, if yey or no to what extent may it be used?

Do you mean just using invert? If so, then I believe that is legal. All of the other tools you can use also to any extent as long as it is done to the entire image, which normally those are. 'Abusing' any of the tools such as going to an extreme may be legal but is not always well accepted by the voting masses.

The general rule that has been mentioned in the past is the color of the pixels can be changed, but not their position relative to each other. Keep in mind that it is also governed by having to be applied to the entire image with no selections.

Use of Curves is allowed; the Invert command is similar to a shortcut to reversing the graph in the Curves command, and is definitely legal in Basic challenges.
