First off, this is my first post so please be easy on me... The first thing I did after registering was read the rules of submission. I am a little confused on something though. I already searched and didn't find an answer. The following comes directly from the rules
"Your entry must come from a single photograph, taken during the specified challenge timeframe. You may not post-process your entry from or to include elements of multiple images, multiple exposures, clip art, computer-rendered images, or elements from other photographs (even those taken during the challenge week), and other similar items."
However, I have seen several photos that fail to meet this criteria. Am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated... Thanks in advance
-Brian

Brian, I don't know of any photographs that don't meet this criteria. If I am correct, that section means taking a part of a different picture and adding it to the photo you submit.
If you do see a photo you suspect isn't meeting the website rules, please request a disqualification.
Welcome to the forums by the way. They are as addicting as the update button :)

You are not missing anything regarding the rules, however, something to keep in mind is that anything done IN the camera is legal. There are a lot of "slow shutter speed" images in numerous challenges which are very legal, but appear to have a 'multiple image' look to them. I do believe there is a "how'd they do that" in the LEARN section at the top of the page on how this is done.
If there is a photo that you feel breaks any rules, please bring it to Site Council attention by requesting a DQ on it and entering details or why you think it breaks the rules...
but be aware...there are some VERY talented photographers around, and can do things with the camera that may seem illegal, but be very legal. Doesn't mean it ALWAYS is, but most of the time it is legal. LIke I said, if you feel a photo has broken the rules, request a DQ and we'll look into it.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies!
Heather,
Im glad you mentioned the "how'd they do that" because that is what initially sparked my curiosity on this subject... I was reading the following tutorials
//www.dpchallenge.com/how.php?HOW_ID=19
//www.dpchallenge.com/how.php?HOW_ID=34
If im not mistaken, the artists decribe taking multiple shots and shots of other shots. It seems to me that this would be a violation. Again, Im fairly new to this and Im sure its something that I am not understanding rather than someone else breaking the rules. Thanks again, everyone. |

It's okay to have another photo in your photo as long as it's not the only element. You can't just take a straight on shot of another photo but you can use another photo as a prop in a shot that you set up. Does that make sense?

In a way, yes, they are taking photos of other photos, which would be illegal on it's own. However, In 'Garbage In Garbage Out" The photographer has simply placed the 'printed photo' in a situation where it is of use. Had it ONLY been a photo of a photo, that would definately be illegal, however, this one has a printer in the photo.
The XRAY photo has used long exposure and also included his hand in the photo as well. So technically these are not simply "photos of photos" they are photos which include other photos, but also include other elements.
Not sure if I cleared that up at all, but I tried. lol |

Nope, those are within the rules! :) It's ok to print out a picture which is then placed in the scene you're photographing. What wouldn't be allowed is if (in the garbage photograph for example) the photographer took a picture of the garbage and a picture of the printer separately, then edited them together in Photoshop or some other image editor.
Since there are "How'd They Do That?" tutorials for these, it's usually safe to assume the techniques are ok for use in challenges. Otherwise the photographs that are being explained would have been disqualified. Where you'd have to be careful about that assumption would be if the tutorial is about a photograph that was never submitted to a challenge, or if it uses techniques allowed in the Advanced Editing rules but you're entering a challenge that uses Basic Editing rules.
EDIT: And yes, what they said about not taking a photograph that consists only of another photograph.
