All of these images were taken on the 3rd of October, and several vied for a place in the Free Study. I spent the whole day working on my taking headshots (I took full a full body and then would zoom in to get the faces) and I'm very pleased to get these 8 out of about 170 or so of the best shots I had (I took over 300 total that day).
I would love any comments you may have. I tried to bring out their eyes and the color (since the costumes are so colorful).

Mana is the only one that cought my eye - good pose, no highlights, fialry clean background. The others seemed to have either lighting or background distractions. I think a wider aperture and cleaner backgrounds would go a long way. I'm no lighting expert, so I can't give much guidance there... Not sure what the flash triggering capabilities of the Coolpix would be, but if they're limited, you'd probably need some kind of external directional lamp.

The backgrounds and lighting was hard because I kept moving around a garden area outside of a hotel. I only had two of those people that I could pose to my will and take places, the others I stopped and asked for a shot. I had trouble with exposure because sometimes it was in the direct sun, sometimes shade, and sometimes darker shade. I didn't mess with flash because I only have the on camera one and it tends to wash people out when it's light outside.
I liked Mana too, as did a couple other people I asked here, and it was the one that would most likely have been entered in the Free Study, but I couldn't remove the distracting elements of the background enough to suit me.

I think they are all great portraits, but Mana did stand out. I think its the power of the singular color. You have a great eye for color, I think these are really nice! :)

Those are good shots. I bet your friends are going to like them. My favorite is the gal in blue. |

Thanks everyone!
Sonja, you're right! The first one ("Momiji") is my favorite paritally because my friend and her family love it. ^_^ "Mana," "Princess Garnet" and "Super Sailor Moon" have been hits within the community of other cosplayers. People that know them and ones that don't. A friend of the girl in the "Princess Garnet" really loved it and she's a model (at least semi-professional I think) so that makes me really happy!
I think you're right too, Dana. The blue really does stand out nicely, and that's one reason I took the photo to begin with. ^_^
If you guys are interested, the gallery with the rest of the photos (142 right now but I'm still uploading) is right over here.

Nice portraits. I like Mana and Sailor Venus (nice coordination with the background color!) the best, but they are all consistently good shots. |
