Vulcanic eruption has started in Vatnajökull (for the third time in 8 years, see this from 1996 and this from 1998).
Can anyone lend me a plane (and a pilot) for shooting ribbon image in the Bizarre natrue challenge.

Great images, I could pick you up in my lear jet but I don't think we would make the challenge deadline.
give me a little bit more warning next time.

If you're serious (*if*), I'd recommend hiring a chopper, since you'll probably want to hover while you take shots, and hanging out of the doors is a bit easier (unless you like taking photos thru perspex) :o)

LoL!, I am not hanging out of anything above a volcano.....

I would love going there, and I will open the plane door if I wanna shoot something :)

Yeah, nothing like losing power over the maw of a volcano and plunging into magma to ruin a great photo outing.

That would be a little more serious than getting a flat on a country back road.

LOL - Reminds me of that [stupid] Jeep commercial that's running in the States showing the truck landing on the terrain after being spit out of a volcano. The small print at the bottom of the screen says "Do not attempt this yourself" or something equally obnoxious. My thinking is that if you are so inclined to drive your Jeep into something like that then you get what you deserve. Tee hee hee!

We have 4 or 5 hours in advance to Eastern US so we can still make it.

I saw this while it happend from the air today! :-)
I took off from Iceland airport at 07:35 heading for Oslo, we made a turn and the pilot said we could see the eruption on the left side of the plane. I had a window seat on the left side, but unfortunately I didn't have my camera handy... I wrote an e-mail to a newspaper that they had the wrong height of the eruption in their headline, they asked some questions and posted another article here: Dagbladet (Norwegian national newspaper)

It was the most amazing flight I've ever been on. :-)

That's the disadvantage with the 20D+battery grip+lens, it's very heavy! :-D

I'd be perfectly happy to sit on the ground and take a photo of you doing exactly that :)
