Here is my ideia about the voting in the challenges! If people vote under 5 they should always comment why they gave that vote, so people with less good fotos good improve, from 5 and up in would be left at your own choice, i think this would help people improve a lot in there pictures! but this is just my opinion.
What do you think? |

| It would mean people would just vote a 5 or up if they didnt want to comment or leave a pointless comment instead. Forcing people to do things does not always mean they will do them within the spirit of the rule. |

| OK but if you forced comments from 1's and 2's then revenge voters or Trolls would leave footprints. I tend to vote more for photos that I admire so I suppose you might say that I skew the vote. I also find it difficult to "advise" people who may be better photographers than myself. I tend not to vote on photos of subjects that I don't like rather than vote low because we all see beauty in different things. |

I don't think forcing votes will improve feedback and will possibly serve to reduce the number of votes made.
If I have nothing to say about why I don't like an image then I have nothing to say - that doesn't mean I'm not entitled to make my vote. All I'd do if forced to enter text would be to put something like "Not keen on this image" or something equally useless.

5 in my book is an average midway score, so you are suggesting I comment on 200+ images in some challenges!
1s or 2s I agree, it is only polite to comment why so low, but for the rest it would just deter voters or result in higher votes.

Please don't think that I'm taking this too seriously, this is a "fun" site and a great place to learn from others. However, as the nature of the exercise is competition then I think that the system should be structurally robust in terms of the accuracy of the result. There is only one reason to vote a 10, but many possible reasons for voting a 1.
On my scale, everything starts at 5 and increases or decreases on the basis of better than or worse than 5. A 1 would indicate no technical or artistic merit whatsoever. There are not many of those here.
A malicious 1 will attenuate a hard earned 10 to a 5.5 ie close to average. A malicious 3 would attenuate a 10 to 6.5 (not nearly as damaging to the deseved score) this is more significant to higher scoring photos but "spiking" high quality submissions through jealousy or prejudice is possible under the current set up. How much of it goes on I dont know but the current low scores in the OFS makes me wonder.
Just a thought. |
