I have had lower than expect scores on over 50 DPC challenges so far. Is it me? Or, is it everyone else?
It might be that I suck as a photographer???? But, that can't be true, because I really love my own work?
NAAAAA, it must be those wicked voters who have had it out for me all along.
Well, that's my story and I am sticking too it...

I think if people would limit their voting to the 20% minimum they'd have the time to comment on a good number of those. To try and vote (let alone comment) fairly on nearly 500 images means that either you're unemployed or you don't get any sleep.

The picture I entered is well-lit, pin-sharp, and nobody can say it "doesn't meet the challenge" (but believe it or not, someone DID say that in one of my comments). People are judging the subject of the photo and not the photo itself, for it's technical merits and uniqueness. I should have entered a damn boring sunset or landscape shot. It's pretty disheartening to have someone tell you that the shot that you believe to be one of your best of the months SUCKS. |
A lot of people vote based on what they like or don't like. Technical merit is secondary if it even enters the picture at all. I've found that the ones that do rate based on technical merit tend to do their ratings later in the week.
On the other side I'm probably being knocked for something cliché. Technically I think my image is pretty good. I know some of the flaws but I have no comments yet so I can't say whether those flaws are also bringing it down.
C'est la vie. Vive la DPC Voters. |
Laurie, I'm positive your shot doesn't suck! Hang in there!
But you know what bugs me? Lets say you have a photograph that is not technically perfect but it's really emotive - hits you in the gut - tells a story - gets a reaction! Then you get some dolt saying they really like the image; it made them cry; it made them feel something; whatever but they are voting it down because the DOF could be deeper or gosh, if only they could see it in color. Does art have no merit? |

One thing I've learnt is not to expect. I'm at 5.6 for a very last-minute rushed entry for music and 5.2 for a carefully planned, well-executed (if I do say so myself) shot for the free study. |

I don't want to toot my own horn, but I was expecting for high 6, around 6.8....hoping really, for a ribbon...yellow, red, blue, don't care. And I'm sitting at a 5.08.
My music is at a 4.9, and while I'm disapointed, I'm not surprised. What I'm surprised at is that they're rating both on the same level. and they're definitely NOT. If i'd seen my FS picture done by someone else, I'd have easily scored it a 9. And I've never said that about anything I've done before.

Just a passing thought.
Photos that score well in these challenges all look "good" in thumbnail size. The thumbnail is the first "point of sale". The 20% rule for voting means that voters with narrow band have to invest a lot of time waiting for the full image to load. I wonder if images that look poor in thumbnail size (such as my humble submission) might be suffering due to the fact that the system accepts a vote before the image is fully loaded. Perhaps contests with more than 200 or so entries could have a lower minimum vote requirement.
Just a thought. |

my first to entries to a challenge were very poor, only just scored above 4.0 for the both of them, how ever my Poverty entry is sitting on just under 6.7 so very very high for me and hopefully a ribbon to boot, just shows what can happen when i listen to good advice. :-) |

Many voters make a first pass and group all shots as 4, 5 or 6, then go back later and mark them up or down as needed. With so many images in this challenge, a lot of the really high or low votes will come later in the week. |

My personal best looks pretty lame as a thumbnail. I received several comments about the "surprise" of opening it.

But the voters only had to vote on 27 images in that challenge didn't they.
Anyway, I'm not campaigning on this issue....Just my impression. |

Both my images are scoring quite low. Maybe the trolls are out for halloween?

Much lower. I think I'm losing touch with the discerning, creative, open-minded voters!

Well....... I see I'm not alone!
Like the saying goes, "Misery loves company", and I'm all smiles now. :-)
From what I can tell, most people (including myself) don't take things too seriously. It's supposed to be fun, after all.

I started at a 7, but my score now sits at a measly 5.9.
I consider this photo to be my alltime best ever. I was hoping to do better, but will be happy if it makes my top five on my profile page! (: So, I just need a couple more larger votes PLEASE!!!

I'm averaging a 6.3 in the free study...and just got a comment which really threw me off...
"possibly the worst photograph ever conceived or taken."
I am very confused how such a comment could be made. |

After working on the photo for OFS, I was sure it will help increase my average, but I guess I expect too much :((
I think I am going to do what I like to do, or things I like to try no matter what score I get. My School Days submission was also such an effort, which I knew would be off-topic for most of the voters, but well I got to try something and I did :) |

Spill the beans...who left the comment?

Well Guess what, I was not going to mention the commenters name BUT I just read thru all of is commments made on other challenges and he's a real JERK... so here I go.
"hey ARTICLE 19 untill you have to courage to participate yourself in challenges, why do you refrain from shitting all over other peoples work...you have to guts to shit on people, why don't you have the guts to show how much more talented you are than everyone else....but your probably way above petty challenges..."
Sorry everyone. |

Well happened to me once, but there are other things that p*ss me off even more.
Got a comment one time on my photo, nice composition but blah blah and he/she voted me a 1, I could tell because I was refresshing every minute or so.
Turns out he/she had a similar shot in the challenge and he/she wasn't doing so well...
I was realy mad but decided NOT to PM and leave it at that. I finaly score way higher then that person so I didn't think it was a problem anymore.
Some people do just strange things.

hehehe Colda, you picked wrong! but that's ok, I really won't mind if someone decides my shot is not good, it's the way these things go, BUT I do mind jerks like ARTICLE 19 who just trashes everything to make himself feel precious....I've been reading some of his posts, and it's the same thing...he's a demi-god. I just wonder why people will actualy pay to join a challenge based website...and not join in the challenges...but rather just make idiotic coments, with no basis in photography... Tell my the compo sucks, tell me the lighting is bad...I'll respect that, even if I do not agree...but saying something like "possibly the worst photograph ever conceived or taken." where and how can this be helpful?? |
