I was just thinking. I'm not sure how much money is involved with running a web site (or this one more importantly) and if there's even any extra, but what if for like once a month, there was a monthly challenge and if you won, you would win something sweet -- like the latest, greatest camera or something???

I know there's other dp web sites out there that do that...I searched, and didn't see it discussed here at all.

What do you all think?

I'm sure it would be a feasable plan should they get sponsers, and being on that top 100 websites you cant live without thing would have no problem bringing them in. But, is that the direction Drew and Langdon want to go in.

There are different laws regarding contests in the United States alone that we did not have the money to research and come up with an agreement for when we started this, which is why we've never offered anything more than a ribbon. It might be something we look into down the road, but I don't see it happening in the near future.

I was thinking something similar the other day. Even something as simply as "Pay a Buck To Enter" and top three get 75% and DPC gets 25%...or something similar. This would eliminate need for sponsors, too. Only problem is those that don't have access to PayPal... Getting sponsors may be a pain and you can't just give away prizes without having some cash to pay for them.

You have a part-time one man research staff at your disposal.

That sounds seriously fun, but highly illegal.

How about donating part to charity and a small part to prizes?

I think this would be great especially with winter and the holidays coming up :)

I won't tell. ;-)

Gosh, that legal stuff just takes all the fun right out of it.

Sponsors generally want some measure of control and would probably want to change DPC.
Drew and Langdon have produced an almost flawless venue for our mutual benefit and I would hate to see it altered significantly.
But I do like the idea of a tangible prize!

I got an idea the other day and discussed it with another member here on DPC that urged me to discuss it with the admins.

Why don't you have real ribbons, just some small ones (maybe 2-4" high) that you could put in an envelope and send it to the ribbon winners, you could have it produced with a dpc logo and have it in the right colors, blue, red and yellow, I doubt it will cost very much, maybe $500-1000 a year including the envelopes and stamps. You only have to have 20-40 more paying members to cover that cost, I'm certain you will gain them just by having real ribbons. I think it would be neat to have something. You could even have the member fee $26 instead of $25 if you want some extra money for this.
Other idea that I got (not as good, but better than nothing), and doesn't have to cost you guys anything is to send a picture of a ribbon or a winning-sheet (what is it called, a "diploma"?) to the winners with e-mail to print out.

Real ribbons should only be sent to paying members and print-out ribbons(/diplomas) with e-mail for the non-paying users of the site.

I think some kind of reward that the ribbon winners can have their hands on would make the members and users try even harder to win ribbons. This would improve the site and the quality of the photos in average, and not at least result the site having more paying members!

How does this idea sound?

personally i wouldn't be lured by a ribbon coming the mail... i would probably forget about it, then throw it out, or put it in a box. i am more than satisfied with a virtual ribbon on my profile page... now if i could just get a few of them.

Are there any Lawyers who are members that are willing to donate their services? I think it's a great idea and red tape shouldn't stop us progressing.

Maybe I'm missing the obvious, but why would this be illegal -- many competitions and tournaments are organized in a similar manner?

A little off topic but.....

PowerShotUser.com is offering a prize this month, a SanDisk Ultra II 512 MB CompactFlash card for the highest scoring Picture of the Day during Nov.

Ok, how about gaining xtra 500k of storage space in DPC then for a contest win? Or some other virtual goodies!

Could this be a way for nonmembership ppl, if youre good enough, to win free membership @ dpc, for one year or discounts to next years membership fees?

i think one of the great things about this place is that we are all here for the sheer love of it, not because we get any prizes and certainly not so we can get little ribbons to stick on our walls.

I say we keep it this way (unless I win in which case I want cash prizes.....)
