Took about 90 pictures today of a rugby game just knowing that one of them would come out SOOO spectacular. Unfortunately, none really did. This is the best out of them all.
I understand my shutter speed was too slow, but I'm curious as to why it would 'auto' choose such a slow shutter speed when it's under the 'sports' setting.
If you notice anything weird, it's because I edited out another player that was standing behind him.
Any other info or comments GREATLY appreciated.

There's 3 aperature settings, 2.8, 5, and 8 when in manual mode.
On a setting of 8, that would make the shutter speed faster? I just did a test here, and on aperature of 8, the shutter speed was 1/60 although the manual says it goes upto 1/1000 -- I don't see an adjustment for shutter speed.
edit: sorry, slowest shutter speed is a 1/1500

An aperture of f/8 is a small aperture meaning you will have LESS light hitting your sensor. Your fastest aperture is f/2.8
A shutter speed of 1/1500 is your FASTEST shutter speed. For FREEZING sports action you need at least a shutter speed of 1/500

Would a higher aperature setting change shutter speed at all? I wish there was a setting to set the shutter speed but apparently there isn't on the s3100 or s3000.
I was just looking back at all the photos I took today, and some of the ones I took in full AUTO mode are like shutter speed of 1/200 but these ones I took in SPORTS mode are all around shutter speeds of 1/60. But in the manual it says for SPORTS - gives priority to faster shutter speeds.
Anyone have any links to how to MAKE the camera's shutter speed faster or any tips on how to do that?

If you don't have a Shutter Priority mode, where you can tell the camera what shutter speed to use, then the best thing you can do is to select the fastest aperture for your camera ( in your case 2.8 ).
If you can set the camera to a faster ISO rating, like 400 or 800 that should give you a faster shutter speed as well. The sports priority mode did what it could to get a decent exposure under the conditions. Since the camera was at ISO 100, you needed a lot of light to freeze the action. Looks kind of like a gloomy day in the photo. There probably just wasn't enough light for the camera. See if you can set the ISO higher, then set the aperture wide open to 2.8 and that might be the best you can do. |

That makes a lot of sense...it was a really gloomy day with rain on and off (I actually got caught in the rain when I was in the woods like a half mile from my jeep).
I just looked at fujifilm's website, and shutter priority isn't available on the 3100 but is on the 5100. The 5100 seems so much more versatile in so many different ways -- including 10x optical as opposed to 6x optical and a ton of other settings.
While currently, the 3100 is more than enough for me in many aspects, I can see myself outgrowing this one really quickly, so I think I've made the decision to just go exchange it at Best Buy for the 5100 (as I'm still within the 14 days).
I understand the light was low and at the faster shutter speed priority, those shots may not have turned out anyway, it would be nice to have the option of ME being the one that made the setting that screwed up the photo as opposed to the camera selecting a setting I was unhappy with. And like I said, I can see myself outgrowing this camera quickly...we'll see what they say at the store when I head up there tomorrow.
Until then. :-)
