Please have a look at one of my first attempts at duotone, what do you think?

If you were going for a kind of creepy and desolate atmosphere I'd say that you nailed it nicely. Looks like a bit of a murky green tint that works really well. So does the grain, especially in the background.

Normally I'd say it could do with a bit more contrast but in this case I think the tonal range of the image adds to the atmosphere.

Thanks Kieran, desolate yes and I thought the obviously abandoned buidling made it look a bit creepy. I have to admit that the grain wasn't intentional. It was shot from a moving boat with a 300m zoom so it had to be fast and the image you see is a crop of only about half the original frame, so its blown up a bit.

I think the duotoning is OK, and there's nice detail and depth in the building, but I would use a different second color; maybe a light blue or gray.

Remember too that you can make a duotone (or tri- or quad-tone) using any 2 (or 3 or 4) colors; one of them does not have to be black. For example, with this image, you might try a dark green or brown in place of the black, and the light blue or gray to carry the highlights.

For me the big problem is a lack of sharpness. I think your idea and composition was good, but to really work it would need to be taken from a VR lens, or with a tripod. I realize you didn't have that option, but I think that's what you need here.
