Just wondering how often lenses should be serviced to keep them in top shape.

Keep them clean, get them fixed when they're broken.

I'd consider having a large enough supply of silica gel in your (closed) bag or pack an essential precaution to avoid premature servicing. Without it, moisture can create perfect conditions for mould to to grow within your lens barrels. It might take years for this to happen, but when it does the cost of repairs may exceed the price of the lens.

Silica gel is available in camera stores. Certain makes are large enough for a big bag and can be 'recharged' when depleted.
