I had cataloged a folder of RAW images using iView Media Pro 2.6 and was pruning out the bad shots, before backing up, when my hard drive filled up. I clicked on one image in iView (not realizing the drive was full) and every file in the catalog is now GONE. I cannot find anything in the in finder or in the trash. I have got to get these images back! Suggestions please!!!

If there's a possibility they could be gone - turn it off! Don't touch another thing.
If they're deleted somehow, then everytime you do something else on your computer it automatically deletes stuff. What I mean is, when you delete something it's still there..the computer starts REALLY deleting when it needs that room for other applications.
Shut it off and call a mac dealer. I know a girl who had an entire wedding recovered from her MAC for about $75CND. |

I'm using my work laptop now and the mac is just sitting there waiting. I'm hoping there is a file recovery utility I can use? A dealer is an option, but the closest one is 90 minutes away.

if you REALLY need them back I suggest atleast CALLING the dealer first...like I said, and they'll telly ou the same thing - the more you use the thing the less likely it'll be to recover the files later (if need be). And the more expensive it'll be.
At least call. |

if you haven't delete them - could it be that the mac doesn't have enough space to show them ...
how big is the drive and how full is it.? |

I agree, call the dealer or Apple tech support (800-275-2273) before you do anything else. But this may not be as bad as it seems, the files may still be there but just not showing up in the Finder. Strange things start to happen when you run out of disk space, which could certainly include the Finder not being able to show you a true listing of what's on your disk. It's possible that just by quitting all applications (and maybe logging out/rebooting) you'll reclaim enough disk space for the Finder to re-sync itself and show the files again. But first you should call the pros... |

How about trying iView's support?
I'm with agwright.. Outside of the iView, can you view the images on the disk?
If you have deleted the files, as Lori says, you want to avoid writing files to the hard disk as much as possible, although going as far as turning it off doesn't get you any nearer to getting your pics back. :)
I won't comment on asking a dealer, except to say I have very little respect for their technical knowledge.

I should've said "MAC service centre" as opposed to 'dealer'.
They told my partner that even running the machine puts the files further and further into no-mans land .. if it's a case of them being deleted. Who knows! |

What kind of Mac, and what operating system? If you have DiskWarrior, use it. If you have a recent Mac and Apple laptop, you could connect them with a Firewire cable and hold down the T key to startup the Mac in Target Disk mode. It will then appear as an external Firewire hard drive on your laptop. Since the OS isn't running on the Mac, it'll have more free space because it isn't using VM swap files. Run Disk First Aid to make sure everything is OK, then go through the disk and delete/archive to free up space.

To boot from the CD stick it in, then reboot and hold 'c' down until you get the grey Apple logo. |

Ok... I'm close, but all I can do is run the install from that CD. I could install to my firewire drive, but I'm afraid it will erase it. I must be missing something.

There should be an icon visible for you to double-click too. It has the option to install on the same disk as the app. No?
Edit: didn't see the earlier post - please ignore me!

Can you see the folder and files listed? Don't try to open them as it won't open cos it uses the hard disk as virtual memory.
If you have a laptop as well, can you use programme like laplink to drag some of the files out of the folder into laptop, thereby freeing space on Hard disk?
If you can, move some over, then burn a CD or DVD of the folder...perhaps two copies, then clean up the hard drive. Maybe you need to have a second, large hard drive for storage only.
I run a 40 Gb hard drive as main drive and have an 80Gb back up drive where I store photos etc. If C drive goes down, I don't lose my files. |

I don't think you can boot from a downloaded copy of Diskwarrior unless you create a bootable CD of some sort (do-able, but not particulalrly fun). If your Firewire drive has a bootable System on it, you can install Diskwarrior there to run on your Mac. Otherwise, install in on your laptop and use the T trick to mount your Mac as an external drive on your laptop and run it that way. |

If you have a second Mac, why not firewire your whole folder (the one with all your important pics in it) to the second machine? It should be visible and accessible there.

I would definitely check to see if the image files are actually gone from the disk, or if ImageView simply lost it's mind about where to find the images because of the disk full condition. |

I just learned this... not only does norton unerase not work, but there is no program on the market that can unerase a deleted file on mac os x. I guess this is great from a privacy/security perspective, but not so good for lost files. In my case I didn't delete the files... but they are long gone. I tried diskwarrier and some file recovery software, but nothing was found. Something in iView kept opening the files after the drive was full and I'm assuming that it couldn't close them.

You need to find better sources of information. There are several utilities that can recover deleted files in OS X, including Data Rescue, File Salvage and yes, Norton Utilities 8.0.2. |

I believe Data Rescue is one of the best products on the market for this purpose and their web site is my source of information. I tried their tool and it could not find the missing files.
Q: Can Data Rescue recover a file I just deleted (I'm running Mac OS X)?
A: No, there is no tool on the market that can recover deleted files without being loaded ahead-of-time. OS X (UNIX) writes over your deleted file immediately, impeding recovery (this was different in previous operating systems that were not based on UNIX). Our other product, Data Recycler can prevent this from happening by protecting you from this type of data loss in the future.
Thanks though for the help. Your comments earlier sent me to the right places. I managed to get OS X installed to my firewire drive and booted from there, which is pretty slick, so I could use disk warrier and data rescue on the startup drive.

Oh well. Hopefully you didn't lose everything. My cousin's hard drive died the same week his digital camera was stolen (and the week after his new car was stolen). Count your blessings. |
