i have the canon digital rebel, and find as the colder weather moves in - i spend more time looking for things to photograph indoors.

in the past few months i have collected, and created a number of lights, a light box, some psuedo reflectors, and things.

i find with these lights i can get some pretty true color recreations, and blacks/whites using a custom white balance. typically i will over expose the white balance shot about 1 - 1.5 stops. the problem is i am repeatedly having to redo, and reset this as i format the card.

i am curious if there is a way to permanently set this custom white balance, since in most cases i am using a combination of multiple light sources of varying temp. if that were the case - i could use the presets for outdoor / natural light shots, and then simply switch to the custom setting to have the previous custom WB already there.

the only way i can figure to do this would be to lock the shot of the light on the white BG, so it doesn't get erased when formating the card, but feel this would prevent a proper full format of the CF.

any other suggestions?

a side note - no matter how much i try i seem to forget 50% of the time to set the custom WB photo, but change the WB setting to custom - shoot 10-15 shots, only to find they come out like the AWB setting... having this permanently set would also solve this oversite of mine

thanks.

You could use RAW mode. Then you'd never be screwed by setting the wrong white balance, and you could write down the white balance values in your RAW import tool and reuse the values for every other image. (Don't know about your RAW conversion software, but I use RawPhoto/dcraw with GIMP2, and it allows clicking on a point in the image to take a white balance sample from a neutral color, then you can save the white balance values it calculates, and use them later.)
