FYI- Apple just announced a new version of the iPod for digital photos. With this gizmo and a Belkin Digital Camera Link (vs. the slow media reader), you can offload images in the field without a camera and view them on the iPod or a TV. There are similar hard drive-based portable media readers on the market, but the iPod actively synchronizes your images, and is arguably easier to navigate. |

Great timing. After twice filing my 512 CF card this weekend (first use of my Rebel :) ) I reliezed I need some kind of off-camera storage. My current iPod is 2nd generation and doesn't support the Belkin camera link.
I was thinking this:

But it's kinda dangerous - there is no way to verify the images transfered okay. |

um...ok maybe it's me, but it seems a tad retarded that the ipodphoto doesn't even come with a card slot?! What were they thinking?!

I was thinking the same thing. It sure would've been a bazillion times more useful with a built-in CF reader, but that would have required retooling the iPod to a larger form factor. I guess the theory was that you would download to your desktop computer as usual, then synchronize your photos to the iPod for display on the road. The best compromise might have been to include the transfer functions on-chip, then include a USB adapter for direct connection to your camera. |

yeah. without a way to dump directly from the camera to the iPod, this is pretty much useless. who wants to view images on the 2x2 screen?
for my upcoming trip, i was looking for something like this. i got a gimini (20G), and i'm glad i didn't wait for this. what a disappointment.

I would have bought a FlashTrax ages ago if it had a FireWire interface. |

Heya..i can't complain about the flashtrax..I've had it for about a year n' half and it has been a true workhorse! I still find the logic behind the ipodphoto a bit puzzling ...what a wasted opportunity for apple. |

Some of iRiver's portable devices support a USB camera host system, which allows you to plug in and transfer shots direct from camera. Maybe the new G5 (?) iPods support the same?

You have to buy Belkin's CF reader:

Although $600 for the iPod + $100 for Belkin's CF reader... it's an expensive solution. |

That was speculation. This is an actual product announcement. RE: the last two messages about a reader... read the original post: Belkin Digital Camera Link. |

I'd rather buy a full laptop at Walmart for $598 . I personally use a 20gb Archos Gmini storage/mp3 player that I paid $167 for and it doesn't need an attachment. The CF port is built right in. That Apple price tag is way too high for low-budgets like mine.
