Hi,
I continue to have exposure problems when there is a subject in front of a bright sky background. Is there a good starting point for proper exposure? |

Have you tried using flash ? |

Also try using a lens hood.

Lens hood might help with flare, but won't really affect the exposure. Try using the spot meter on your D100.
(Hold down the button near the shutter release with the 'matrix' or 'grid' icon, this is the metering mode button, and turn the main dial until the 'spot' icon shows in the LCD. Then the light metering will be done only from the selected focus area.) |

Oh yeah, some other options that are useful:
1. manual exposure mode. Turn the mode dial to manual, point the camera at something illuminated with the light that is falling on your subject, and set the aperture and exposure manually, then take your picture with those settings. The backlighting won't affect the exposure then.
2. exposure compensation (+/- EC). Hold down the EC button and turn the main dial to force the camera to increase or decrease the exposure from its metered value.
3. ae lock. Point the camera at something about the same brightness as the subject, press and hold AE lock (back of camera, press with right thumb) while recomposing and taking the picture. The exposure won't change from the one you pointed the camera at. |

dialing in positive exposure compensation does the trick (although it seems counter intuitive) |

if you would like both the subject and sky to have good exposure, use a flash or other lighting. If the sky doesn't matter, just raise the exposure. |
