I am visiting Europe next month and have stocked up on Compact Flash cards. I have heard mixed reports on airport security and the safety of files. How should I store my cards. I plan to bring my camera bag as a carry on and am not sure how the scanners will effect the photos I've taken.
I promise I'll post some; I'm still very green. I've been a bit intimidated so far but I'm gettin' over it. You all are so very talented and inspiring. |

Both my CF card and my MicroDrive have made the journey from the UK to the US and back again, with no problems what so ever. ISTR they were in my hand baggage though, which might help, but TBH I doubt you'll have any data corruption.

My CF cards have been with me on several overseas trips and literally dozens of trips within the US, with no ill effects. The level of x-rays used in the scanners will not affect your data or the card.
Film's a different matter. The newer scanners for checked luggage are more powerful, so the best bet for film is to carry it on. |

Thanks for your help. Seems I need to carry on my bag and relax. |

I travelled all over Europe with my camera this summer and found that a more important factor in losing images is losing the card, or having something stolen. I didn't lose any camera gear but did lose my Lonely Planet travel book from under my nose. One minute it was on the phone box in front of me, I turn around and boom it was gone. I heard stories of much worse from others. A good idea is to put your CF cards in the same place that you'd put your passport...in a travel wallet or something similar. Don't leave them in your pockets. Fumbling around for a coin or something in your pocket can easily cause it to fall out. Watch your stuff like a hawk, especially in train stations and and airports and markets. A camera can be grabbed and gone in less than a second.
