Come to Mexico, Gringo, and you can buy that dream lens cheap. In Guadalajara last week had a guy offer one off the back of his Chebby pickup.

I'll be getting it for myself as part of my year end bonus. I wonder how long it will be before Santa makes an early visit? :)

edit: I told Alecia a while back that I wouldn't get another lens before Xmas, but for the record I insist that it was worded "I will not get another lens FOR MY 10D before Xmas". k?

Yeah, I want one too but there's this weird thing with my family; They like to eat on a regular basis. On top of that, my husband insists that we save money for retirement and our kid's college education. Go figure!

Way to go Jacko!!!! You'll love that lens! And it's a BIGGGG BADASS lens! It basically lives on my Mark II.

OMG ... I actually forgot about the badass factor when considering this purchase. Should I get the lens hood too? Does that add any use/badass points?

The hood comes with the lens. Doubles the length of the lens! Even more badass!

can only help your cause! ;)

Yup it sure is a sweet lens. It is a really nice range, wide but not so wide that you have to make special compositions to make use of it.... hope you dont have to wait too long.

Well, I guess that'll do ;-) Hey, I remember you saying another bundle of joy was on the way... When is she due? (Congratulations again on that, by the way :-)

I'm gonna play contrarian here. It's a sweet lens but it's designed for a full-frame application. I have a 17-40 and I wouldn't like anything longer on the short end. The 24-70 is like 38mm on the wide end on a 1.6x crop. Yawn. I'm selling my 28-105 for this very reason. Not wide enough. The ultra-wide zooms are better on the 300D/10D/20D as general purpose zooms, IMHO. If I were looking for a 2.8 zoom as a general purpose lens it'd be the 16-35.

For a super sharp lens in that range I would rather get a 35 1.4L. Real low light capability and even better sharpness and contrast to compliment my 17-40. But that's just me.

Here's a shot I took with the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L Lens wide open at f/2.8 at ISO 1600, available light.

I'm sure that's a great lens, it's an L after all. But isn't that the one where the Tamron rates almost as high for about a third the cost?

Canon EF 24-70 f2.8 L rates 4.16 on PhotoZone; 4.6 on FredMiranda; and 4.73 on photographyreview; sells for $1125 (after rebate) at B&H.

Tamron AF 28-75 f2.8 XR Di rates 4.14 on PhotoZone; 4.6 on FredMiranda; and 4.47 on photographyreview; sells for $370 at B&H.

The Tamron comes with a 6 year warranty from the manufacturer whereas the Canon has only a 1 year warranty. You can get an additional 7 years of coverage for the Canon by purchasing a Mack extened warranty for $35 at B&H.

You'll save again with the Tamron if you buy filters- it takes 67mm versus 77mm for the Canon.

Both have a lens hood included; the Canon includes a pouch that the Tamron doesn't. The Canon is an L but not a white one.

Unless that slightly lower focal length range is the reason you are buying, the Tamron desreves serious consideration. Is the prestige of L glass, and/or your brand loyalty, worth $800?

That's why I have a Sigma 15-30mm
