I am excited about the concept of this site with the challenges and what not. However, I am hesitant about submitting to them because of your rule against copyright text. I don't like the idea of my photos being available to anyone who wants to use them uncredited. I'm not a professional photographer and am not interested in selling anything, but I don't like the idea that my work could be passed off as someone else̢۪s. The only site I currently submit to is betterphoto.com, where they use some sort of code to block people from using the right click, "save picture as" function (on a PC at least). If you were to implement something similar on your site or at least allow non-distracting copyright text, I expect you would likely see an increase in membership and participation.

The no right click script does not prevent people from taking images. All they need to do is use print screen and voila they have a copy of the image in the clipboard. The use of copyright on images would remove the anonymity of the challenges, which is a big thing on this site. Even with copyright notices on images someone can still go into a photo editing program and crop out the image or clone it out as most often they are put on sections without details. One way to protect images is have a large watermark on the image but that takes away from the image itself. The only real way to protect your images is to just not put them online in the first place. If someone wants your image bad enough they will find ways to get it.

I know print screen is an alternative avenue, but the sort of people that would resort to that are the sort that would resort to photoshoping copyrights out or find some way to steal the image no matter what precaution you take. The people that concern me are those that would more casually use an image that is not their own, as a desktop or as clipart. I think the no right click script or a simple copyright tag would prevent that sort of thing. I don't have much of a problem with the use of my images by others, just with uncredited use. Having worked on various publications, I've found that a lot of people are more than willing to throw around images they did not produce themselves without even the tiniest nod to the photographer or artist responsible. At the same time, many photographers, professionals included, are more than willing to share their work as long as due credit is given.

While it is possible that someone will use one of your photos without permission, that possibility is really quite remote. An excellent way to learn how to take better photographs is to see each other's photos, note what you like about them, and then read the criticisms that others have written about your own photos. The tiny chance that someone might use a picture of yours without permission (especially such a small resolution one) seems like a reasonable risk to take on for the amount of knowledge that you're going to pick up here.

Obviously, all of the people here have decided to post photos regardless of that risk and I think we're all improving our photographic abilities as a result. Hope to see some of your shots soon! :-)

Welcome to dpc kearock. I don't think there is much difference between right-click and print-screen, if they want it they can take it. I don't think it would even be illegal to take it for use as a desktop wallpaper as long as you didn't try to claim it was your own or try to sell it. People here frequently take another's image and edit it and then post back the edited version as part of the process of sharing knowledge. In voting we judge each others shots and wouldn't want them to be seen with a watermark for fear that it would make the votes lower. It's just life on the internet, a risk you have to take to participate here.
