I just thought i would challenge everyone to comment on their 10 lowest voted images in the current challenge. I haven't done so .. but i will do it now... and just thought it would be good for the folks who are just beginning, or don't know 'what they are doing wrong'.

The challenges I've voted in I've made a point of commenting. I find it very difficult to find the time and the strength to comment on all the photo I vote on.
But I have made a point of commenting on the shots I vote highest and the ones I vote lowest. My appologies to all you mid range photographers but my fingers and brain just can't take it. There's so many!

The bottom 10 are always (for me) the hardest to offer constructive criticism on. (Sometimes it's not even easy to just be critical of the work.)
Since I have nothing in either of the two current challenges I've decided to try a different voting scheme. I'm starting with the assumption that every entry deserves a 9 or a 10 and when I can't bring myself to give one of those scores I try to avoid giving a vote until I can make a comment. (I have also left comments on some of the 9's and 10's.)
Good idea, "leaf", to offer this challenge to the challenge. Got any virtual prizes for those who manage to comment on each of the final 10 lowest? |

Its a strange thing voting and commenting, its very much a matter of personal taste, (obviously). It also depends on your mood at the time, if you're feeling up or down, if you're tired or whatever. Yet we all seem to put so much faith in what other people have to say about our shots.
Why do you think that is?
BTW left comments in your portfolio leaf.

sometimes i feel like i dont have a place to critique, so i usually only comment on the ones where i can find atleast something good to say about it. I also dont know all the technical jargon yet so when i do comment i only do on the obvious. another thing is since i have been voting most of the ones that i put on the top of my list are placing lower. so either i dont know a good shot or i am just seeing things different than most of you. i do know for sure now that i have a different personal taste than the average dpc member. anyways starting to ramble now...... |

No don't be put off, riotspyne. Your comments are just as valid as anybody else's and I'm not just saying that because you commented on my shot in the Communication challenge :-)
I tried to make this point a while ago that ALL comments are equally as valid. Just because one person sees things differently to somebody else, possibly the majority doesn't mean there are in any way wrong.
The best photographers on this site, (anf there are quite a few) may praise or pull apart a shot. But if your opinion is the opposite then it has every right to be heard AND it carries just as much weight, IMO.

I only leave a comment if I feel my POV would help the photographer improve the image or understand its lack of appeal for me. As someone else said, the lowest ones are often the most difficult to do this with. Often the ones that achieve my lowest votes hold absolutely nothing redeeming to me. I think my comments on photos that "have potential" are more valuable than comments on shots that I think merited the delete key. Harsh perhaps, but true in my case. To me. a lack of comments speaks as loudly as a slew of them. |

i'm like Blackdog i try to make a comment on every image i vote on just so that the people have some i dea of what others think, BUT most of the time i figure (unless there is something that degrades from the image) that i skip the middle range of my votes and just give the lowend comments or the highend comments.
my oppolgies to the middle men and women but i find i just can't get around to all of you.
G2G&get some plimanary pics. of what i see the word poverty as.

I'll take you up on that challenge, Leaf. I just commented on ten of my lowest, and all my tens, in the night shot challenge. Thanks for the prompt! |

I've been watching these two threads and posting in both, but now they seem to be merging:

WHat I often do is comment on 10-20 consecutive photos, no matter the quality. I will simply decide, "I am going to comment on the next 20 photos no matter what." This helps me to not pick and chose.
ON th eflip side, I do think that as a lowly amateur, my comments have limited value. But, that is the beauty of this site, just take the comments with a grain of salt. |

but giving comment also helps us get better at giving comments and also looking at our own picures critically.

I absolutely agree, commenting on other peoples photos forces you to think about things a lot more and sharpens your own concentration when it comes to shooting.
