Yes, open the web browser then use the 'file/open' on the tool bar at the top to open your first page - once you've created it.

This is brilliant.....I've been trying to figure out how to make a homepage to link to a gallery/events pics too. Ages ago signed up for free host (well I think it's a host, but it's free!!) and haven't done anything with it cos I don't know how!!! Thanks Lee for starting this thread, will be following it very very closely.

HTML is easy, I promise! I had a tiny little book that i learned it from. And the HTML goodies site that MK linked you to is all you will need to grasp the basics.

I have a suggestion though:
Create a folder on your hard drive of choice and call it 'website'
Create a folder inside of that one and call it 'images'
You can create folders inside images to help you organize your photos better if you wish. This will help make it easier on you. It is truly best to have ALL of your sites images inside of your main folder or subfolders. Good luck!

As en example (when you get more advanced), here's what i have for folders and subfolders

Main Folder: Mirdonamy Site
Subfolder: images > Subfolders: photos, sitegraphx, art
Main Subfolder: styles
Main Subfolder: scripts
Main Subfolder: cgi-bin

try to keep the names simple and lowercase, it makes it much easier! Try to use one word with no spaces in your folder names if possible.

Lee,

To get started type (or just copy)in to notepad something similar to the html below and save it with a .html or .htm extension, then simply open it in your browser of choice.

[Title that appears in the top left of the window]

[any thing here appears as plain text in the main window]

I did this in notepad and saved it as a text file and when i opened it in my browser, it just opened it again in a new window of notepad...and then when i tried to save it as an html document in a word processor, it displayes the html and not the title, etc...

Make sure you have it saved as something like index.htm - Not index.htm.txt

To do this when you are saving it use 'save as' and then select 'All files' from the 'Save as type' drop down.

Well done. What about adding some colour to the page?

There should be some information on the web that will tell you the hexidecimal numbers for various colours - but the example here (above) should be green.

As a freeware for doing html, xml and just about anything else, Bonfire Studio works really well.

Here are a few simple examples of handy html tags, these all go between the tags.

[Paragraphs help the layout of your page]

[bold text]

[italics]

[line break]

Have fun and remember if editing the html in notepad gets too hard, give up and use the trial version of dreamweaver.

Tranquil, it is still worth your while looking at some of the software programmes that have been mentioned here. HTML is great to learn and you'll probably derive a great sense of satisfaction from doing so. It's great once you start coding your own links, learning how 'tables' and 'templates' can help you place stuff - and so on, as you build the design of your site. But, for sheer speed of creating a site quickly, the software programmes come into their own. Of course, it still helps to understand HTML coding aswell...

Yea I've been fiddling around...I now know everything that tom has suggested and more when it comes to headers and font sizes and aligning etc...and i plan to work some more tonight. I downloaded HTMLpad and I will see what the benefits are. Once again thanks..and I'll keep you updated on my new site...thanks!
