I checked my hotmail and for some reason I now have 250MB worth of space instead of the 4 or 5MB I had before...anyone know what's going on?
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy about it, but also confused!

MSN increased it recently. Also, you can send 10mb attachments

| They are responding to the rather large offering from gmail. |

| Everybody else seems to be offering free 1GB or more space so everybody else is increasing their mailbox sizes. |

| Sweet! I just got gmail today, which is cool, but I honestly just wanted more than 4MB. 250MB is more than enough...now I don't have to remind my wife to keep deleting all those e-mails the second she reads them! |

Hotmail bites. ;)
Have you ever tried to read an email newsletter with links from hotmail? Not only does it insist on using a frame with its little name in the top pane, if you click on one story, read it, then go back to the message and click on another, it tells you that your message has timed out and you have to go to the listing and select it again.
Geesh. I've complained to them, and they recognize it as a problem, but meanwhile I switched to gmail and that doesn't have that problem. (Nor does Yahoo.)

Yeah, I'll probably switch to gmail too...I was fortunate enough to get 'thatcloudthere' for gmail, just like hotmail so it shouldn't be a problem for people to remember my new address!

No doubt. I always recommend people who are using ad-mail sites (where most of your screen is filled with ads, such as HotMail or Yahoo) to switch to something like FastMail, which is a top-notch email service that you can even access with your mail client via IMAP! (And for a one-time fee, you can upgrade to a "member-level" account which you gives more options, more domains to choose from, allows you to send mail via their SMTP server using your own mail client, get rid of the small FastMail signatures, etc.) Highly recommended. |

I have my hotmail set up through Outlook Express at home, so it looks like a regular internet service-provider's e-mail...

Happened to me as soon as I used my hotmail account to get a gmail.google.com address. It might have just been a coincidence but my other hotmail account is still at 2mg, while the other is now at 250 mg.

That's nuts!! The same happened to me...that's awesome. I hope somebody at hotmail got a raise for thinking that one up! |

I paid $25 for a year with my hotmail account, I now have 2 Gig of storage, no advertising, 20MB attachment limit, and get NO spam in my inbox. I've had my hotmail account for about 6 years and finally paid for it, and it is TOTALLY worth it!

You'll soon have to pay a yearly fee to continue to have that ability.
If you don't, after April you'll be forced to use the ad-laden web-based interface.

They list some pretty fancy reasons not to allow the continued use of Outlook access...I'm sure it had more to do with lack of exposure for their sponsors!
Do you know if I can do the Outlook thing with my g-mail account? |

Don't think so; Google relies on "reading" your email to present you with ads related to whats in your inbox (just like they do when you ask them to search the web). Having IMAP or POP access would alleviate you from seeing that extra "content". Hence my recommendation to pony up the one-time $15 to become a member at FastMail, or at least sign up for a free Guest account (you can always upgrade later)... =]

So FastMail lets you do this? |

Gmail advertising, if it's there, is virtually invisible in the weeks I've been using it.
And you can forward your mail, if you have a popmail account from somewhere else:
You can automatically forward your new Gmail messages to another email account. Here's how:
1. Click 'Settings' at the top of any Gmail page.
2. Click 'Forwarding' along the top of the orange 'Mail Settings' box.
3. Enter the email address to which you would like your messages forwarded.
4. Select the action you would like your messages to take within Gmail from the drop-down menu.
5. Click 'Save Changes.'
Finally, if you want, you can get a utility called ePrompter, which lets you read and respond to quite a few of the online email accounts without going through the web interface. It's free. I use it for my MSN and Hotmail accounts, and my two yahoo accounts. It sits in your tray, and the summary window shows the incoming count of all services. It's a great way to integrate these email accounts.
//www.eprompter.com
You might be wondering why I have so many email accounts. These are my "spam" and membership accounts, to keep my real email from my own domains cleaner!

Yes, they provide full IMAP access (send and receive) after becoming a member (one-time $15 fee), and receive-only (have to use your ISP's email server to send) if you use the free Guest access.
I think more and more free email providers will start to limit the ability for third-party programs to "interface" with their mail services (as MSN/Hotmail has announced) because of the "hit" they take to their ad-based revenue (which is why it is free). FastMail's free service is subsidized by their paying customers, just like DPC. |

They try to limit such access, but often don't succeed where utilities like eprompter are concerned. It's just like the chat services trying to "block" out third party clients like Trillean. Yahoo and AOL have done this several times, and within a day, Cerulean studios has a patch. |

Netscape also increased from 5 to 250 MB.
I think AOL owns netscape, or at least Netscape mail goes through AOL servers. |
