I've seen this with a few lenses like the canon ef-s 17-85 f4-5.6 is usm.
Whats it all about?? I want one for my 10d. Is there no way?? |

I believe that EF-S lenses project into the camera body and only the 300D and 20D are suitable for this type of lens - they will not fit on a 10D. |

The Rebel and 20D have a smaller mirror than the full sized one on the 10D and other slr cameras. Therefore canon is able to make a series of lensed "EF-S" which protrude further into the camera than standard EF lenses. This results in a smaller lighter lens as it is specifically made for the size of the sensor in the camera. The coupling is a little different so this lens cannot be mounted onto cameras with a standard EF coupling. If one of these lenses was mounted to a camera with the larger mirror, it would probably jam and damage something.
At least that is how I understand it. Correct me if I am wrong. |

Sounds spot-on to me.
I believe it is possible to "mod" the 18-55 EF-S lens for the 10D, but I wouldn't recommend it!

Yup, there is a mod that involves cutting off the back ring of the lens that is there simply to prevent it being fitted to non EFs cameras.
There is a detailed web page somewhere showing how to do it.
That will make it fit the 10D but:
1) Put the lens on any other EF lens mount camera and you'll smash the lens
2) Voids warranty on the lens (obviously)
3) If you do get it wrong and it stuffs the 10D - voided warrenty.
Looks doable, apparently safe with the 10D, but like Paul says, I wouldn't risk it.

I don't see why anyone would want to use the EF-s 18-55 anyway!

I think it has to do with their financial situation. For example, every once in a while I'll run into somebody who can't afford *gasp* to upgrade their kit lens when they buy the rebel! And that person calls himself a photographer...
...oh wait, that's me. |

Exactly... name a lens as wide or wider than 18mm for the same (or similar) price, and I'll get it immediately.

I have no interest in the 18-55 (I have a 17-40) but that 10-22 looks mighty interesting...
