Is there a way to get a photo "pre-validated" before the challenge even begins? I have a feeling that my photo for Defining features may start off with low votes because it has a really unusual 'feature' about it. I would hate to start the challenge and get low votes because people think that I cheated (which I definately did NOT do).
Thanks!! |

What you should do is drop D&L a message through the contact button explaining what your reasoning is and they will e-mail back to you the required information. |

I think I sometimes subconciously give lower scores when I see a validated image soon after the challenge begins. Usually it's because I see no reason for a validation for the image.
I think I do this because it seems like the photographer is trying to get a higher score for a particular image by validating. |

Interesting :)
I didn't think that this photo would need it. Then I stepped away from my desk, returned an hour later, and noticed how strongly unreal my element looked....
I'd think it was fake if I didn't photograph it myself :) |

Once the challenge starts you can go to the voting page, select you own photo, and there should be a link to "Request Administrative Note."
Follow the instructions you find there. We do not automatically validate such requests, precisely to prevent people from trying to influence the vote with a note ... |

However, once the voting starts, and the deliberations for validations occur, and the low scores accrue because the shot looks somehow 'unbelieveable', the score by the time the photo is validated is then too low for any chance of a ribbon, if that is important to you. This has happened several times to me. The validation came in a day or two, and by that time I had numerous comments saying they scored me low because of such and such, and the scores just never climbed back up.

I simply give up. I will never even bother to validate another of my images. You see, even when they learn it is validated, this does not make for a change of mind with many voters when in advance editing. They just hate something that trips their computer. The lesson is do not get too creative because the purist will just hate the image on the grounds that it is manipulated and not aesthetically pleasing in their judgement. They are the wise, they prefer a casual candid shot.
I decided to test just how much they will reject, I really want to know what the limits are. Of course, this is merely a voting block. Not all members are such purist and there are many that look beyond their noses. But hey, like in all departments of life there are always differing schools of thought. Glad that I belong to none. I do not care how or what work you put into your shot. I only judge the quality of what is before me and I never denigrade any sprouting styles and there are many.
At the end, the voting majority brings down their final determination and this is what it is. Have you seen the images where hate, love is exemplified. look at the scoring and notice how the low voters have cancelled the high voters. Yet each group will argue for its side.
Personally, I laugh, because I just don't care. Once you start to define the love for your preference I wince a bit. At this stage you are taking yourself too serious.
So, I wish you luck with your image but odds are that once the voting begins low it will so remain. However, wait for at least 50 votes and even 100 before you throw in the towel for that effort. I had one image which went from 5.4 to take a ribbon It just kept climbing, but these are more the exception. Good luck. |

Just a reminder, though, that sometimes we need to have a photo validated before voting because we are going out of town, etc. I did that once, and maybe people did think I was trying to "up" my score, but it was simply because I thought there was a chance someone might think it needed validating and I wouldn't be able to respond during the voting. Just a thought.

We don't generally post a "photo has been validated" notice when proof is submitted early because of being out of town. |

... unless someone requests a DQ -- then it is handled normally except we already have the uploaded original. |

Just FYI for those out there. I got my 'validated' tag yesterday afternoon, and since then, my score has gone up from 4.9x to 5.67x...
Not that it is saying anything, but interesting to pass along. This is my first challenge where my score has had such a deviation in any direction. |

Makes me think that maybe the whole validation process needs to be re-vamped??

Or perhaps the voters need to be revamped. It says very clearly in the rules and also after you request a DQ to vote as if the photo is valid. If people really held true to this, the whole validation note wouldn't be necessary. |
