It's not going to remain f/2.8 when you add the Teleconverter, it will be more like f/4.5 |
It fits to the end of the lens, it is relatively big and wide. Unlike the tc's that you put in front of the lens, the end of the lens tc's do not affect aperture. The downside is that you loose most of your zoom and can only use the extreme tele end of your zoom lens.
With the S602 and the TCON 17 attached I've basically got an 350mm F2.8 lens with a lot of CA @F2.8-F5 and some corner softness. Very annoying.

The camera reports you have f/2.8, but actually less light gets into the lens, so it DOES have a higher f-stop.

With the quality of a P&S at that amount of telephoto, you'd be better just cropping a DSLR image to get the equivalent.. |
and just which DSLR do you recommend for £200?

The 12x Leica lens found on the Panasonic Lumix cameras is the best piece of glass to be found on any of the prosumers IMO. The sharpness and quality is superb. I've seen some examples of photos taken with the 1.5x teleconverter that keeps the aperture at F2.8 thoughout, and the quality is stunning. You really would have to spend a lot of money to replicate that with a DSLR. Only problem is that the converter costs the same amount of money as the camera itself, but seeing as an FZ10/FZ20 + converter would come to the same as a top-end Canon/Nikon/Minolta prosumer, I think this is a great deal. |

I think that̢۪s the whole point - You can̢۪t really compare the two.

None. But that isn't related to the amount of zoom the DSLR offers. A DSLR at 18mm is STILL going to be wayyyyy more expensive. :-)
Edit: Fixed quote.

Sure the extra glass will take some light, but not more than 1/3th of a stop max.
Edit:
Despite my critique about softness and CA you do get some great results once in a while :)

I can't quote any actual figures, as I don't have my A70 and TC any more, but I remember it was significant enough for the salesperson in the shop to tell me about it, and I seem to remember it being noticable.
Maybe the S602 is different however..

Some more info about the Panasonic teleconverter:
//panasonic.co.jp/pavc/global/lumix/fz10/conversionlens.html
I've seen so much info about this thing... it is F2.8!! |

Okay, I measured the difference between the S602
* standard 210mm (eqv) @F5 and
* 210mm + Olympus TCON17 1.7xtc @F5
using spot metering, same lighting, same spot, same angle, etc.
Standard: 1.8 seconds
With TC: 2 seconds
Two tenths of a second is not even a third of EV at this shutterspeed.

Well that's cool then! Shame you can't get TC's on the front of DSLR lenses. :-)

I believe you could. Reported focal length would not be correct but if the teleconverter was big enough (like the Panasonic DMW-LTZ10) to avoid vignetteing it seems that it would work. |
