Eddy - a little off-topic, but a quick question: I just installed Firefox after seeing people here mention it. How do I set a particular size/width like you are talking about? Sorry if this is a dumb question! Thank you!

I would prefer to see some way of focussing the attention onto the less expert members of our community. Lots of people have never been close to getting a ribbon but still contribute and pay their dues. How about giving those people an opportunity to shine as well. Here are some suggestions I made on a different thread recently...

1. The opposite of a "masters challenge" - a challenge where you CANNOT enter if you've ever won a ribbon.
2. A come-back challenge where people are asked to recreate a photo they've taken before in order to see how much better they can make it look from last time.
3. Perhaps some new awards for highest placing newcomers or biggest improvement in score.
4. More focus on the tutorial elements of the site perhaps with associated "newbie challenges". For example we might write a tutorial on shallow DoF and then invite entries from anyone with an average score below 6 to enter a newbie shallow DoF challenge.
5. Consider "divisions" in order to split the real god-like photographers from the amateurs. Anyone winning 2 ribbons in a division could be promoted to the next division up for example.

Let's try to keep the discussions separate if we may. Otherwise all the points start getting cloudy, and it gets even more confusing to know what someone is talking about.

Thanks

I'd vote for YES to honorable mention. But 3 ribbons is enough - that's what they get at the olympics, right?. Those 3 people with the best pictures have earned their praise. Runners-up can be mentioned but not awarded. (darn, are we really discussing the value of a colorized collection of pixels?)

What do you think could this work as an alternative? Bob

It is an alternative, to be sure, but I dislike it because it concentrates on the tools used to create the image instead of the image itself (and later the intent of the image) as I outlined.

Although those would be interesting stats to see; and they could be compiled from any system -- including the current one.

Anyone worked out how many ribbons the likes of Kiwi, JJ, David s would have if they were extended down to 5th? 40?

There always has to be a cot-off point, unless we're going to behave like ridulous pyramid-selling organisations and give prizes to absolutely everyone. The more ribbons there are, the less the 'value' of them, whatever their colour. At present I think we have a great balance between recognition and difficulty.

After reading through this whole thread I have changed my mind from 5-ribbon to sort of white ribbon (or whatever) for 4-10th place. No need for more colours, just sort of acknowledge that you have your photo in top ten. This would also be consistent with the top ten results.

The last thing I would want to do is lower the value of the ribbons, I suppose what I'm tryng to do is bounce idea's around because I do want to see rewards given to people as they improve, encouragement awards if you like and I felt that giving 2 extra ribbons could be one method of doing it.

I also quite like the idea of the top 10 getting some form of recognition for reaching the top 10. It is a mildstone when someone reaches the top 10 especially for the first time.

I also like the idea of mini challenges with in a challenge but I'm not sure if that would be managable.

So anyway I got to thinking about it, how can we reward people as they reach mildstones but still keep the integrety of the ribbons?

Well I think I have the answer without working out the details. It goes like this.
When someone becomes a member they are given a series of grayed symbols in their profile, each symbol represents a level or milestone reached ending with ribbons gained. The first symbol would be the lowest/easiest and the last the highest (Could be called masters level 3xRibbons or whatever). As a new member enters challenges and they reach each of the milestones it becomes a coloured symbol showing that they have gained recognition of attaining that milestone.

eg:
1) One challenge entered (Some of you may have forgotten how difficult this can be for some people.
2) Average of 4.5 (Must have completed 5 challenges to qualify)
3) Top 100 Finish
4) Top 75 Finish
5) Average of 4.75 (Must have completed 10 challenges to qualify)
6) Top 50 Finish
7) Average of 5.00 (Must have completed 10 challenges to qualify)
8) Top 30 Finish
9) Average of 5.25 (Must have completed 15 challenges to qualify)
Blah blah blah
Last one)Masters Level (Must have Recieved 2/3 Ribbons to qualify)

The trick is to make each step a challenge but not an unobtainable one, it offers encoragement/recognition of a level gained, helps all of us who are New/learning to set reachable goals and we can see that we are improving. People do not become discoraged and leave as easily. This would have little impact on a professional or experienced photographer but I believe it would be great for people like me who are trying to learn.

Ok that's it form me, geez 3 long posts in a week. Again constructive feedback good bad other is all welcome, is it workable? Bob
