From what I have seen, it works better on digital.

There is a conversion on Canon 300D's where the internal IR blocking filter is removed for use in astrophotography. However, if done by Canon, the price of the camera jumps several hundred dollars!

Apparently it increases the clarity of the photo...just passing this on from my neighbour who does astrophotography...me, I know nothing!

Many astronomical objects emit light at a wavelength known as Hydrogen-Alpha (Há), which is right at the threshold of human red perception and is blocked by IR blocking filters. So removing the filter allows the capture of details it would normally block.

I've not tried them, but converted 300D's are available (Hutech is one company that sells them). The modified cameras may be useful for terrestrial IR photography as well. I'm wondering if you can use one of these with an IR blocking filter on the front of the lens for normal photography.

Thanks for that info dr rick, at least I didn't an ass of myself with that thread!

I know...from my neighbour...that converted camera is no good for normal use as is, so the filter on front, should?? restore it to some degree of normal usage.

They work with the 10D fine, just don't try and use it with a 50mm prime, which I found out much to my chagrin. The lense causes a nasty flare in the centre of the image.

No, wait!!! No one saw my request!

From earlier:
would anyone who does infrared photography mind posting some straight-out-of-the-camera shots, so i can get an idea of how much is done in-camera and how much is PS adjusted? it's still too cloudy here to get a good shot (well, that and i'm at work), but i'd like to keep learning in my down time.

thanks in advance!!

Thanks, Andrew! I thought I was supposed to shoot in B/W mode... do I not have to?

No, shoot in color and then convert to B&W

Also, if you custom whitebalance for infrared, you'll get some more interesting results.

try applying this action to it. Works great.

Any help is MOST appreciated.

I changed the levels, too... it's just not quite what I was going for... once I get a decent shot in good sunlight, I'm sure the levels will come into good use to tweak a better starting place. :)
