Just to make myself feel better, below is a link for all of you who did not know that Cats are actually a food source (as are dogs) in Canton, China. If you don't want to go to the link, here is a little clip from it:
"Of course there is nothing wrong with eating cats, snakes, and bird's nests; most probably these foods are even nutritious; it's just the idea of it that cannot convince Westerners to enrich their diet with these delicacies. Especially cats, being considered pets, receive in Western tradition sympathy to a degree that is never afforded less cute animals such as pigs or chickens. "
-Article on "cat food" - Pun intended
Thank you to all of you who voted me high for "Could You". I appreciate it.

I find it ironic that you submitted a cat photo that fitted the challenge and people still didn't get it. I was surprised how many comments you got where people didn't understand the concept. Great photo :-)

Thanks, Mandy. I was a little startled too. Thought it was quite clear my intended statement, but cest la vie!
46 was better then i thought I'd get, anyway. Or was it 49?

Well, I certainly appreciate the sense of humor and as such i enjoyed this image very much. However, the nervous system of these creatures is very complex. They are very highly emotional and when you cry around a domesticated cat, the cat also cries. Yes, it is common knowledge that some cultures have added the cat to their diets..but by the same token it is also common knowledge that there are cultures that practice canibalism.
This along with the cats does not fit well in the western hemishphere, not because we are naive, but because we feel it is in bad taste. You see nature or creation is both beautiful and ugly. Beautiful because our mind is able to exceed the walls that bind it, yet there is suffering in all facets. The fact that we must kill animals to survive speaks volume of such an advanced yet bloody society. Is this a riddle or is it a contradiction? I am as guilty as most, because I pay other to do the slaughter, but consider the pain these lower animals have to endure.
Again, I loved your image. It is cute and it showed a sense of humor but I would not for one second defend it with another extension of the atrocities of the human being.

Dan;
I wasn't suggesting we condone it, or even LIKE it. I appreciate everything you said, and I agree with it completely. But the point of the challenge was to photograph (in good taste) a "Wacky" food. And then it made sure to clarify to "be aware of the international nature of this site". In China, whether we agree with it or not, they eat cats and dogs and other animals that we have as domesticated pets.
I didn't show a dead cat on a plate. I didn't show partially incubated chicken (no offense to the photographer intended). I showed a cute (living) kitten poking it's head out of a chinese carton.
I just wanted to be recognized for the fact that I was on topic. Because I got quite a few emails and comments off the list about it NOT being on topic. I got a lower score, because people thought I didn't complete the challenge. I just wanted to make people aware that I did.

Again: You are 100 percent correct. Your image did fit the challenge and you did it on good taste. I said clearly that I liked the image. All that I am saying, is that the point is not worth defending because this remains a controversial subject which opens up a can of worm which will ultimately embroil you. You are right and some folks in this site are not that sophisticated to appreciate the humor. There is a clear division in some of these people's head where they would blindly lash out at anyone who tries to justify what is not to their taste.
Believe me, I am only saying that I would not defend it because they will never give you the satisfaction you deserve. Again, I loved the image. |

This is not a "fact" in the sense you need it ... animals may need to be killed for various reasons, but providing necessary calories for the Earth's human population is not one of them. Desirable, perhaps. Necessary, no.
It is perhaps a better-established "fact" that people who practice sensible vegitarianism live longer and healthier than those who consume large amounts of animal-derived foods. It is also a fact that it takes approximately ten grams of vegetable protein to produce a gram of animal protein. |

While stating the above, as you may have noticed, I am pointing out the very negative traits of the human being and how we fail to truly evolve by decreasing the blood shed. In some stage of evolution man did have to kill and hunt to eat. So our argument is dependendent on the time line of histoty. But tes, once we have seen the light, should we have not have changed? Look at the supermarkets and you will find that vegetarians are not growing by leap and bounds. But again, my point is to show what a blood driven civilization we are. |

I appreciate that. I just wanted to undermine the one viable rationale for it : ) |
