how about a challenge where you take a picture that expresses a metaphor & the title is the actual metaphor?
10/05/2004 04:25:44 PM · #2
Sounds like fun ! Besides the photos which would be interesting, we can have all kinds of semi-interesting debate about what is a metphore and whether it meets the challenge. How about metaphores in Spanish? Japanese? ... I'm getting jazzed about this. Let the games begin!

ditto that.
My shot will be: no man is an island
- just a head sticking out of the waves -
I can just see it.

Gauti: Better hurry up, before it starts freezing :)

No, letenele, I will not hurry. This has to be shot in the right timeframe for the challenge. I never said that -> I <- was gonna be the model myself :)

so sarcasm aside & the problems & debates for all challenges, are you all saying this idea bites?

Sounds like fun!

Personally, I think it's a cool idea.

Sadly, I can see metaphors that are not commonly known to North American members doing more poorly than those that are well known in that region but... that's par for the course isn't it.

If voters could allow themselves to just accept and assume that all entries WERE metaphors known and used by the photographer it would be even better.

Still, I think it would be an interesting one.

Are we talking about a certain language or culture here?
10/19/2004 10:24:03 PM · #10
yes, I like this challenge alot.
No, I will not give out any more ideas :)
If you need ideas about metaphors, one good place to start is George Lakoff's: .Women, Fire and Dangerous Things
gotta love the title anyway

Xion: surprisingly many metaphors are cross cultural (or at least exist across many languages).
It will probably be interesting to see what the arguments in the current challenge thread will be - What constitutes a metaphor? Difference between a metaphor and a simile?
Maybe it would be best to restrict this to existing/stock metaphors, but that removes a lot of the space for creativity.
OK, one fav metaphor: Idi Amin is an animal

The problem is that, given the general populace here, a large number of people may not know a metaphor from an analogy or who knows what. Many of these will not bother to find out, and of those who do, some will come away with a baggage of dict.com definitions as opposed to a real sense of it.

A similar thing happened in the irony challenge. The finest examples of irony were completely missed by most - and judged righteously.

Too bad the Irony Challenge was over before I discovered DPChallenge. Just quickly browsing through it, it seems to me that most of the entries were on subject, or at least not more off subject that is the norm. Do you have any specific in mind?

Maybe the only good example in the irony challenge, which was not in the top 10 but a good example of irony was: free spirit - tied down

Interestingly this has a lot in common with another open thread at the moment, see: Challenge Entry viewing technique

Not having a particular challenge just because some people will misunderstand the object of the challenge, hmm, these are not very good grounds.

Well, some obviously did:

this might be a relief from the overly serious challenges that have been here lately :)

This sounds a little like the Literalisms challenge, which was heaps of fun.

I think metaphors would be a really fun challenge, although yes, there may well be a lot of language/cultural issues.

Ironic, isn't it? ;-)
