Here is an idea . . .
A bulb challenge, open topic, the only restriction is that the photo must be taken in "bulb". I think DPC village can be very creative with this topic and would provide a wealth of opportunities.
What wa say . . .?

What exactly is in "bulb"? I have never heard that word used except in relation to lighting, but I don't think you are suggestion a lighting challenge. |

its an option to lock the shutter open for an indefinate period of time, ie: however long you want. you don't have to be in contact with the camera during this time.
i could take about a 4 hour exposure with a fully charged battery.
EDIT: for my manual film camera i have an actual rubber bulb ( thats where the name comes from ) that attches to the shutter button - via an air tube, and uses air to press it down, i then lock the bulb squeezed and it holds the shutter open. with this camera i could take a three day exposure if i wanted - because it doesn't use batteries for anything but the light meter. on the digital rebel i have a wireless remote, one press opens the shutter, the 2nd press closes it.

sounds fun but there would be a huge number of DPCers that wouldn't be able to take part.

Bit like Wildlife, isn't it? |

Soup, thanks for explaining it for me. I would have to skip this challenge, but it does sound like some interesting shots could be made. A good challenge for voting anyway. |

that would be nice but not everyone has bulb function on their cams. We wouldnt want to be elitist would we?

don't you need to buy something so you can walk away from the camera in bulb? I thought if you didn't have it you had to hold the shutter down the whole time you want it to shoot. |

A cable release, remote control or a rock would do the job. |

A bulb challenge would be interesting. Some members don't even have cameras. |

Not everyone have models that will pose nude (Nude and Nude II challenge). . .
Not everyone have Wildlife access (Wildlife Challenge). . .
Not everyone can take a decent picture (me included) . . .
Not everyone know how to take a Macro shot . . .
\Sarcarsm
This Challenges may not be for everyone but neither are some of the challenges posted on DPC either for a lack of creativity or a lack of ressources.

true, but isn't this different than not have a nude model or not knowing how to take mac shots. Both have a remedy while getting a bulb function, save buying a new cam, is not so easily fixed.
Regardless, I get your point.
I did say that I thought it was a good idea but one that was not so fair.

the idea is good, but any challenge based on a camera feature is not just. |

If the challenge is bulb/ 1sec+, I'm sure almost everyone would be able to take part. I think it sounds like a great challenge. |

Yes, if you keep a min limit on the exposure time, that sounds good. |

On the Nikon D70, is there a way to use the bulb mode without having to hold the button down the whole time? |

you need to buy a remote - or use some tape, or commision someone to hold it for you.

Bulb is a tool used to ge the desired results. The desired results being a longer shutter time. Make the challenge centered around the desired results -- not the method used to obtain them. Please.

I like this idea a lot but I think like someone said already, it needs to be worded like "1 second or more exposure time" or something like that. I have a picture that I have been meaning to take that would fit this perfectly too. |

Can you not also use the self-timer? Is that at D70 feature? |

With bulb, you should be able to stop in whenever you like it. With self-timer I think you can go upto 30secs. Remote is cool. |

Make it a "long exposure" challenge...
