I just got my 1.6x teleconverter, here are my first shots:

Both were taken handheld at full optical zoom of 16X (about 600mm) with IS turned on. My dogs were the only models I had handy...

I'm curious how you like this camera overall. I want to buy a small camera with good zoom for everyday use. I like to carry a camera at all times, and the SLR with lenses is just too big for that.
I am also considering a Panasonic FZ3, but I do like a swiveling LCD (like my old G2) and using CF cards would let me share my 1.75 GB of CF cards among the two cameras and not have to buy SD cards. Not to mention I already have a lot of NIMH AA batteries and rapid chargers, so I'd be covered there as well.
But I heard the S1 has focusing issues (slow) and the Panasonic, other than comments about noise, looks like a very nice camera! |

I have the Canon S1 IS too, very easy to use, great pictures but is a little slow to focus on total zoom with the teleconverter. |

I love the camera. I haven't noticed the focusing to be too much of a problem, but I don't have anything to compare it to. My biggest dislike is the lack of a optical view finder. It makes the continuous shooting feature hard to use. The lens cap that comes with it is crap too. It doesn't have a macro mode either, but it will focus 10cm from the lens so it doesn't do too bad without.
This is about as close as I can get:

But this was taken from about 6 feet away (and he was only about an inch long):

I love the size, the zoom, the picture quality, the ability to move the auto focus point, the IS and the tilt viewfinder. It also takes great video at 30 fps, but I don't use that very often.
Also, it has enough buttons so you can quickly and easily change settings without going through a bunch of menus.

anyone has a wide angle converter for S1 IS?
How good is it? I've seen complaints in reviews at amazon.

Thanks, it was going to be my back lighting challenge entry but I didn't think it was obvious that it was back lit...

Really my biggest complaint is about the EVF system. I am used to a slow autofocus/shutter-lag from my Olympus, but the EVF freezes the image during the focus stage, and it makes it really hard to do motion panning or action shots. But I think all the cameras in this class have EVF systems ...
I specifically chose it over the Panasonic because is uses standard CF cards and AA batteries -- using proprietary units in this area always seem to lead to trouble eventually. I also found it relatively easy to use one-handed. I haven't bought the lens adapter/hood yet, nor the remote (pricey!). |

Does the teleconverter reduce DOF? If it is I'm gonna plan to buy one!

Not that I noticed so far. The two shots I posted with it were taken at high shutter speed/low aperture and the DOF doesn't seem very shallow.

I had the same thing Canon PowerShot Pro1 at first, EVF will lock for a time. If you can shoot with two eyes open (one on EVF and one one subject) you won't even notice it after awhile. It bothered me a bit at first but don't even notice it anymore. I have gone into the menu and turned just about all the whistles and bells off, No shot preview (no chimping), Autofocus in Single mode, No histogram etc...
There is a guy on the net that took a toy rifle scope and fitted it to his hotshoe and uses that on his Oly A2 to get around EVF Lag, kind of weird looking but he states that it works for him.
As for dof on the TC, I have the x1.5 for the the Canon Powershot Pro1, I love the soft, shallow dof that I can get at around F/2.8-F/3.5, like any lens it's all about subject placement but I can get the dof I want easier with TC one than off.
