I was just wondering who wrote the challenge, and if we could get a clarification on the ZOO Vs no ZOO or controlled environment issue? Wouldn't it be great to have a definite answer so that we could all focus our time on critiquing the photos entered? Just wondering.

And what good would that do? Even if it said, "NO ZOOS" right in there, people would still say, "but you can't tell it's a zoo shot", and for the most part they'd be sort of right. I mean, many shots that aren't *OBVIOUSLY* zoo shots, you can still pretty much guess they're from a zoo.. but hey, you can't *know*. So there's still that aspect.

In the end, it all just comes down to voting with your gut. I did, and I'm staying right out of the threads that are bitching about it because none of that back and forth about the same damn thing is changing the way I voted. :)

I haven't heard an "in stone" answer to this question either. I'm going by the discription of the challenge and as far as I'm concerned, a zoo is NOT a "Natural environment" - it's man made. I'm voting accordingly.

Once the challenge is posted the interpretation of the person who suggested it holds no more weight than anyone else's.

Whether or not other peoples' interpretations match what that person intended is moot.

There is no abitration service on what interpretations are valid and not valid.

That's part of the ambiguity of the wonderful concept of interpretation.

I've steered clear of the 'Zoo' threads (didn't enter) but would a 'wildlife park' park meet the ever more discerning criteria? what about a safari park? or a managed park such a yellowstone? Jeez, whatever the challenge 'we' all seem to find a way to say something doesn't meet the challenge.

I'm not one to score an 'obviously does not meet the challenge' shot highly just because it is a good shot but in this instance I would vote a well taken 'zoo' shot more highly than a poorly taken shot in the 'wild'. IMHO almost allmost all lions/tigers/etc are living in some form of managed environment.
