Did you have this trouble with your 20D? I haven't had this happen, but I will do a firmware update regardless!

I am having trouble with the built in flash & the kit lens. When I have the lens at 18mm, I get a shadow at the bottom of my photos when I use the flash with a subject closer than 10 feet away. Anyone else notice this? How do I fix this?

funny! Did any of you try it with another wide angle? Same result? I have a 28mm-80mm lens but don't have this shadow issue. I like taking close ups of the cats at wide angle... but since they are indoors, I need the flash. do you think the 580ex will solve this or make it worse (close-wide)?

this happens when the lense is in the way of the flash.. basically casting a shadow in your scene. This will especially happen at the wider angle. Ways to counteract this, is to use a flash that isn't so close to the lense (ie: a hot-shoe-type flash thats mounted higher up), or if that doesn't help, getting a hot-shoe type flash that has tilt capability. Indoors, i always point my flash towards the ceiling. This prevents red-eye, lense shadows, and generally creates better photos.

Here's an example of a flash photo of my cat, (no other light), with the flash pointed to the ceiling:

She was about 4-5 feet away.

Arielle, it's to do with the flash hitting the end of the lens and casting a shadow. The more you zoom in the less of the shot has the shadow in. Just like cropping the centre out of the shot you have with the shadow.

One way to solve this is to stand further away and zoom in more. Another is to use a short lens (hence it the flash won't hit the end of it), and another is to put the flash on a bracket or off-camera cord.

Thank you all! I am so new to Wide Angle photography! I am used to my 28mm with the 1.6 crop factor to take into consideration that I didn't realize how 18mm with flash would affect my photos! I am glad to learn something new!

I will be getting my 580ex in as soon as Canon releases them to the stores nearby!!!

Just a warning : some post on dpreview talk about their camera going totally dead after the firmware upgrade. Better only do it if you really have a problem, otherwise sit and wait for further developments.

willem: Yikes, that's never a fun thing...thanks for the update!

Phil has also updated his news posting at DPReview to reflect this as well. Advised to not perform the update until an official word from Canon can be obtained.

I'll only update the firmware once I can get it from Canon USA or Canada. Good to see they did find a fix for the lock up problem.
