Can you describe a bit more what you're after? An example?
Most of us on DPC would achieve a silhouette effect by shooting against light, and exposing for the light. If you have some shapes against the light, you'll then lose all the shadow detail and you'll have your silhouette. |

dodge the highlights, burn the shadows.
repeat over and over and over...
This slowly but surely will push the midtones either brighter or darker each pass depending what tool you're using at the time.
After repeating a few dozen times you'll have most of it either black or white, with a small amount of midtones remaining. Once you get to that point you can reduce the image to two colors to save time.
