BobsterLobster, Iceland is very expensive country. But I think this is intended as a camping trip, and I can't really see why one would spend a lot of money on resturants, bars, shows, taxi etc. So alltogheter I wouldn't expect it to be an expensive trip. Low budget maybe: 50-80USD per day? we only need big CF's and a few bottles of vodka!

Be at one with nature... maybe take better photos as a result? Think how easy it is to slide out of bed before dawn for the misty sunrises...

That'd be a bit tricky in Iceland in June/July, since the sun doesn't tend to set :o)

Hope you guys can sleep when the sun never really goes down. It never gets dark during jun-jul.

There are hotels but it´s not cheap. Maby if you could know it soon how many are coming and where to go you could all rent guest houses together around iceland in diffrent times and that could be cheap.
I´m sure that will be no problem for the locals here to find because some torist guesthouses can be expensive but it´s all about knowing the locals guesthouses.
You wont regret this trip!!!
Wish i could be with

There's a lot of sleeping-bag accommadations, costing some $22-35/night, you can expect to pay $25-27/night in average.

In june all the hotels have melted since we build them all from ice and snow. We probably can find you an old hut to stay in. I would not recomend it though the tents are much more cleaner.

The tents we got last year have internet connections, so cool!

Before you freak out...
There are hotels all over the place but some of the coolest places are where you have to go by foot and sleep in tents.

so what are the proposed dates?

LO, I revived that thread today with the dates...

Here they are again:

All right, tentative schedule: Jul 3, 2005 to July 10th. I`ll be in Reykjavik earlier June 26 for a few days for a conference. Let`s have a roll call here, who`s definitely in?

Hmmm.. not sure about the whole tent thing but jeez, I gave birth without drugs! Surely I can handle a little tent. Surely....

I have a stupid question, not being much of a globe trotter... How does one get camping equipment from here to there? Or do you just rent it there? And when one camps, what do you eat? How do you cook it? Where do you shower? And most importantly, where does the coffee come from?

Please don't laugh at me (although I realize I sound ridiculous). I've just NEVER been camping in my life! Much less camping in a foreign country.

people generally have their own camping equip. which they would bring.
eating: buy canned or dried goods, or things that last at least a couple days and keep them in a cool place.
cooking: most camping types have some sort of a small portable cooking stove thing, with a few pots to fit on it. if you came along i am sure you could borrow someones cooking things, or cook together with someone...
coffee... is cooked on the cooking stove.

Getting the ball rolling:

I am not a photographer (well I am if you call taking pics of my man's butt hunched over his camera and tripod a photographer) although much to my chargrin I have learned many a thing about photography from my partner. One thing I have learned is that NOT being stuck in one place without the freedom to move around anytime of day or night is vital for not only the photo opportunities afforded by such freedom but also the happiness of the person with a camera permanently stuck to their face. So I have taken it upon myself to suggest for these reasons a possible and more detailed plan of the trip in question ( ty dear :P ) I have included some information about iceland for those that may not already know this. I will try to include more accurate prices if you could all let doctornick know who's in and who's out tentative is ok because I can get some prices for possible group bookings based on that. Keeping in mind the freedon needed for this trip and budget constraints of the people wishing to take the trip. Camping is the preferred option with 4WD vehicles as the method of travel. Hotels and hostels would probably not take too kindly to arriving at all hours of the night or leaving at ungodly hours. Coupled with the locations that would probably not have hotels anyway. So here are the suggestions:

About Iceland

Iceland is an island of almost 40,000 square miles. Iceland's highest peak, Hvannadalshnukur, is 6,500 ft. Iceland has the largest glaciers in Europe - in fact, 11% of the country is covered by glaciers. The coastline is dotted with more than one hundred fjords - and green, fertile valleys extend from them. Iceland also has more than 10,000 waterfalls and countless hot springs. Situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is a hot spot of geothermal activity. Thirty post-glacial volcanoes have erupted in the past two centuries, and natural hot water supplies much of the population with cheap, pollution-free heating. Rivers, too, are harnessed to provide inexpensive hydroelectric power. The electrical current is 220 volts, 50 Hz. Of a population numbering just over 288,000, more than half lives in the Greater Reykjavik Area. The native language is Icelandic but most Icelanders speak fluent English.

How to get to Iceland:

There are daily non-stop flights to Iceland from Baltimore/Washington, Boston, Minneapolis, New York, Orlando, London, Glasgow, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo and the Faroe Islands. Obviously I cannot give you air travel prices from your individual locations but that should be easy enough for you to get an idea online at //www.cheapflights.com/flights/Reykjavik/ for those in the united states or for those not in united states they would have to get a price for tickets to the closest departure city to them this is just to give you an idea I highly recommend a travel agent LOL

Method of getting around Iceland

1. 4WD hire: 5 people to a vehicle is tight but doable, especially with all the photo gear everyone is bringing. Splitting the cost of each vehicle required between passengers Hertz-Vehicle Guide: Iceland Full-Size - Group I (FFAN) Toyota Landcruiser GX or similar Vehicle Features 5 Adults 4 Large Suitcases 1 Small Suitcase Automatic Transmission Airbag A B S The cost of which without asking for group discounts or factoring in member discounts is ISK 91455.22 which is equiavlent to US dollars $1292.11 canadian dollars $I625.54 at the current exchange rates so taking that into consideration dividing that between 5 ppl is US dollars $258 per person. Canadian dollars $325.00 per person.

Accomodation:

2. //www.cyclingaroundtheworld.nl/iceland/re_iceland.htm this web site link is good because the travellers here although travelling by bike describe in detail the campsites and facilities available to them. it seems hot showers and cooking facilities are available just about everywhere. Many Icelandic camping places are located in spectacular surroundings and camping in Iceland‚s beautiful nature will make this trip exceptional. There are camping places all around Iceland, offering a wide variety of facilities and services. Many have swimming pools close by or offer recreational activities. Some camping sites in Iceland offer other types of accommodation as well, such as guesthouses and cottages, or sleeping bag accommodation in cabins.

This link gives you an idea of the standard of accomodation available not everyone may want to camp. but generally where there are camping facilities there are many different levels of accomodation available see this link. //www.alex.is/English/Index.htm But for the purposes of the budget conscious and those that just want an idea camping per person in own tent* is ISK 600 US dollars $8.47 Canadian dollars $10.66 so thats basic camping this includes access to cooking facilities and hot showers the prices may vary a few dollars from location to location but thats approximate. Now there is the next level of accomadation sleeping bag accomodation in a ten person cabin** the price for that is ISK 1600 per person Us dollars $22.60 per person Canadian dollars $28.43 per person and so on and so on the camping sites offer a variety of accomodation.

Finally:

It may be a good idea to have those interested in coming on this trip to state their preferred accomodation requirements too then we can maybe get group prices again. Please also state if you are bringing a friend or a partner. So having said thi, having your own cooking facilities should not be necessary providing a tent for yourself and a sleeping bag and pillow should be all that is required if you choose the camping method.

I hope this helps those that are interested in this trip to answer a few questions together this could be a fairly cost effective and amazing experience.

P.S. Salutes the bum clickers lol :D

Dont worry about them, you are going to a rock in the middle of the Atlantic boiling underneath. There are shower all over the place and swimming pools almost guarantied within few kilometers almost everywhere. Also there are places where it´s possible to find natural hot pools where you can take a bath.
