Can anybody give me an idea of which flashgun(s) I should consider buying for my 300D.

There seems to be so many available, its very confusing...

I would definitely stick with the genuine Canon's if you can afford it, you'll find you get better results from the light metering.

I have the 420ex and love it.

On a couple of occasions I have found recently I would have benefitted from a 550ex, which I could not afford when I bought the camera.

I am shortly going to upgrade to the 580ex when it is out, as I want to be able to use e-ttl 2 (or whatever it is officially called).

For the 300D I'd go 420ex or maybe wait and pick up a second hand 500ex when the 580's hit the market and people want to upgrade.

Thanks, I had a quick look on the web for reviews. One site I looked at said something about the 420EX not having Flash Exposure Compensation.

My 300D doesn't have it built in. I'm not sure what it is, is it something I need to worry about?

Or can I get by without it?

You can get FEC by installing the hacked firmware or by getting the 500EX.

Basically, it's how you override what the camera thinks the correct flash exposure should be.
