I go to load all the photos that I've taken this week onto my hard drive and what do I find? Or rather, what DON'T I find...my cord that connects the camera to the computer! I had JUST cleaned my room and found two other missing items (a watch I'd been missing for weeks and my extra camera battery that I hadn't realized was missing...), but no cord! I tried calling home and having my mom look for it (maybe I left it there when I went home last weekend), but no luck.

If all else fails, where can I get myself a cord? Will Nikon send me a new one?

It's really annoying because I'm going to a big event tomorrow (I average 100 shots/day usually at these things, but this is my first time focusing SOLEY on being a photographer so I expect it to be at least double that) so I need the card space!! Now I have to go through and pick out what images to delete so I can have space...

If it uses a common type memory card, just pop out and get a card reader

Ugh, I have so much stuff on my desk...sooooo many cords...you have no idea. Anyway, it'd depend on the cost. If I could get that for cheaper than replacing the cord (which I may still have...who knows), then I might go for that.

A card reader would be much easier, usually faster, doesn't drain the batteries in the camera and frees the camera to take more pictures (if you have another card, that is).

And probably [much] less expensive than a replacement Nikon part....

or just get another card =)

There are also internal flash card readers (they fit in the floppy bay; and some even have floppy drives as well). A quick search on eBay had a lot of hits that don't cost much. here

I used to use the card, but hell its slow using that method. A good USB 2.0 compliant card reader is permanently fixed to my pc, so it can't be lost.

I recommend that method, the readers are usually cheaper than the specific canon/nikon parts anyway.

A CompactFlash card reader is maybe $30 -- if not less. The cord will almost certainly be at least that much.

Actually, it's only $19.

The thing about not having a card and only having a card reader is that it would be a pain to carry around with me. I have a laptop so I can travel, so...what's the use of having the larger reader if I can have a small cord instead? I can always recharge the battery later.

I'm gonna wait until I can get home to search for the cord myself before I order it, but even then, it'll be a while before I can get there. *dies* I have like 300+ photos I want to download...especially since I completely filled each card today and don't have anywhere to put them or to put new photos. ^^;;

I found one for $10 at Staples, I think its PNY brand. This was awhile ago though, might be $20 now.

(card reader, not camera cord)

Well, I re-searched my laptop bag and guess what was in there...my USB cord. So, I'm loading my photos right now... I feel silly. ^_^

I'll add the card reader to my Christmas list, but I don't really see a need for it if I have the cord...just more money to spend that we don't have...

Do you have a cord from the Olympus you had before? My older Olympus cord and the newer Nikon cord are identical (except one is whitish the other is black). You probably thought of that already.

Yeah, my parents have it at home, but the camera connection is different. I actually looked at it the first day I got it. The Olympus is flat/rectangular and my Nikon is round.

Ami, if you have a laptop, better than a reader or a cord: get a PCCard reader for about $10. It's just bigger than a credit card, fits in your PCCard slot (used to be called PCMCIA).

See //www.wiredzone.com/xq/asp/ic.30571927/qx/itemdesc.htm
for an example.

The only slot that I can find on my laptop is filled with the wireless card that came with it. Would I have to take that out to put in the card reader?

EDIT: And I use that quite regularly here on campus.

Yes, unfortunately, if that's in the PCCard slot, and if you only have one slot (unusual) or if that card takes up two slots (not unusual). What kind of laptop do you have?

But you only would have to take it out for a few minutes to load the photos, then you could put it back in.

Weird...I just took it out and looked at it and it just looks like a placeholder device, nothing but a piece of plastic. I guess the wireless card is internal...

I have a brand new Dell Latitude D600 and yes, it only has one slot.

Yes, that's a placeholder, all laptops come with them. I guess it's to keep the inside clean when you don't have a card in there. I don't use them--and I've never had a problem because of dirt in my laptops (unlike my new Rebel ;-)).

You should be all set then to use the PCCard compact flash reader. They're great, and fast. The interface is as fast (faster) than plugging in a "hard drive" the size of your compact flash card into your laptop directly.

We also use them to transfer files between laptops in meetings (before USB memory keys were invented, but I still use it, because why invest in a single purpose USB memory key when compact flash does the job faster.)
