Earlier this summer, I placed an open order for the Nikon D2x camera. Well, today the order turned into a firm booking. I have paid for the camera and expect delivery on Thursday, January 6th.
The price was $6,995.00 in Canadian dollars. The pricing was just released to my retailer, Henrys Cameras at 5:00 pm last night. So, the USA price should be in the neighbourhood of $5,000 to $5,600 depending upon currency exchange rates. I assume that the USA price was released yesterday too. If anyone knows what it is, please post it.
I am promised to be the 5th camera to ship in Canada. I know that David Cronenberg, the well known movie director is number 4, just ahead of me.
I provided a trade-in of my two Nikon D1x camera bodies and can not wait until the new year to receive my new toy.
Rumours are running around that the CMOS used in the new Nikon was made by either Sony or Canon. If anyone has any other information on the CMOS chip, then please share it too. Of course, I already have the product and sales literature which was picked up at Photokina. I hear that the demo unit will be at the Photo Expo Plus show in New York City.
I also purchased the IEEE 802.11b/g wireless option with the extended range antenna. I am keen to see how well that works?
While in the Henrys Camera store today, they were taking backorders for the new Canon D20. One sales person sold 20 units in just one day last Saturday. They had a few in and are already significantly backordered. So, this looks to be an exciting new product too.

For the record...Morgan has assisted me on a couple of occassions regarding Nikon information. I know of no other resource as up to date on offerings that has actual "hands on" with the items. He is my first stop when seeking opinions. |

I agree, it would be too funny! But, in this age, anything is possible.
But, it does strike me as an odd claim. Canon has a CMOS chip that is 1:1, whereas the new Nikon CMOS is still 1:1.5. Nikon apparently decided to stay with the smaller chip format in order to continue building upon their DX lens line-up. The DX lenses are lower cost compare to the full size Nikon D-series and the full size lenses that Canon offers too. So, I am a bit suspect of this statement?
Sony is well known for their chips too, so that suggestion could be viable.
Nikon apparently specified the technical parameters and the features and performance aspects of the chip and then someone else built it for them to these characteristics.

Thanks for the kind words Flash. I do enjoy the techie stuff, too bad I still suck as a photographer...

Michael, have you checked Leo's Camera in Vancouver? Their prices were significantly lower than Henry's. I got my Canon 1D Mark II from them for $500 less than Henry's was selling it, not to mention I saved on the PST too. |

The D2X sensor appears to be made by Sony, not Canon. Reference here. |

well in the whole scheme of things if canon is producing nikon chips, and the world is actually turning digital, it seems a bad business decision./
i would be skeptical of sony's work.
EDIT: why sell both d1x's?

Yes, I know Leo's very well. I have done business there many times. I also deal with Broadway Cameras, Lens & Shutter, and 49th street in Vancouver. Are you in Vancouver? I have been working in Vancouver all summer. I have completed six four-day trips in the past two months alone.
I have a very good deal with Henrys, so I am comfortable that the price was good. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thanks EddyG, that makes more sense to me. Sony does a great job on chips and has been producing quality CCDs for almost ten years.

I have Broadway Cameras ship me stuff directly to my office to avoid the PST. Several times, they have just shipped me the empty boixes so I could walk away with the camera when I was in town.

Why? Sony made the sensor for all Nikon dSLR's except the D2h and have huge resources. Sony also makes the sensors for 75% of all normal digital camera's out there including those from Canon.

just personal feeling i have based on prior experiences with sony products. i have vowed to steer clear of them in the future - if possible.
CCD sensors you mean - i didn't know that.

i've got a ? for Morgan-was the 6995.00 after the trade or before
the reason being that i am crazed with the idea of the fps and megpixels on this camera but the only price i could find US was $9999.00 body only. so i gave up hope of ownership untill i saw your form here.
(the price i got was about 2 to 3 months ago) |

Do you have a reference for Sony making sensors for Canon cameras? I've looked around and can't find any myself.. (Just curious.)

Nah.... stick with the D70. I used DrJOnes's D1x quite often and it's sooooo heavy and the fps sucks big time. :-)

Sony makes the most popular 8 megapixel 2/3" CCD, and is therfore the one used in almost all prosumer 8 megapixel cameras.. including the Canon PowerShot Pro1.. There's only one that doesn't use sony's ccd, i cant remember the name, but it wasn't the canon. |
