I got the chance to get out for a brief spell today to test the lens I ordered with the 20D.
The results should be more accurate than in the example I displayed yesterday which was blurred due to movement of the tripod.
These are straight from the camera..however, they have been resized for viewing which should be kept in mind.

The first example is a test of the image stabiliser and I was quite amazed at what you can get away with..the shutter speed on this handheld shot

The next two are the same portions of the bridge taken at approximately 70mm focal length and the same settings...One with the 17-85.

and one with the 70-200mm L

They are snips from the full size image

My apologies for the size of the files but I didn`t want to compress them too much and also for my inexperience at this type of thing but I hope this is of help to anybody looking to purchase the 17-85mm lens

EDIT....Images now removed to make space in my portfolio

Really interesting results, Gordon. I can't see much of a difference between the bottom two. Looks like the colors are a tad different but almost unnoticeable. Quality looks the same. I would have thought the L would have been obviously better. Can't say it's worth the extra money here. What did you think?

Edit: I like the non-L image slightly better here.

My early impressions are that the 17-85mm is a great all round lens Jen..but I`m new to the game so my opinions should be treated with caution :)
The IS is going to be a godsend.

Forgot to mention..that the 17-85mm was more expensive than the 70-200L..if my memory serves me well.

I'd say the 70-200L is slightly sharper here. Not a great deal, but it is sharper. I notice it particularly around the grass and around areas of the bricks. Particularly look out for areas with spots of white on the bricks, then count the differences between the two images.

Very interesting comparison, Graham. The 17-85 certainly looks like an excellent lens.

Another interesting lens to compare it to may be the 24-70/2.8L, which although is very likely to be sharper, also costs $1169!

Thanks again Gordon for this useful comparison. I have the 70-200/F4L and I got a good chance to use it today and yesterday, and I really love it (except for it's size). What a fast focusing, sharp lens!

I think it would be cool to start a lens-compare thread. Propose a test shot, have everyone contribute the standard shot when they can. Also, if we start one, I'd like to keep it free of discussion "in place", so we don't lose the trees in the forest.

Any interest? Ideas on how to do it right.

Definitely would find it of interest to see this kind of comparison thread Neil..especially now that I`m in the market for lenses.

Paul, I agree the "L" lens just shades it in sharpness, but I just couldn`t believe that the image stabiliser on the 17-85 would allow me to get a decent handheld shot at 1/20..the potential of that is mouthwatering.
