Am I wrong to be slightly ticked off, or depressed?

I had a perfect idea for the parts challenge. Got the supplies last night, and was going to put it together tonight. Was so completely psyched.

Until I started to vote on the Masters challenge, and someone had already done it. Differen't subject, same concept. Now, obviously, I can't use it because everyone is going to think I "copied" the idea.

Am I overreacting?

Just because someone has already used the idea doesn't mean you can't. If we all thought that way then we might as well put the cameras away since everything has been done before, many, many times.

You'll just have to strive to do it better.

I could not deduce the image you mean but all ideas have worthy variations and sometimes improvements. Rack your brain and see if you can create a new angle.

The idea I had was the same concept, but very different in subject and execution. I just don't want what happend with the waterdrops to happen. Where someone sees it, thinks "that's a direct copy of...", and marks me down intentionally for it. Because while I shouldn't care about the vote, but the reaction to the art itself....it does matter.

And no matter how I try not to let the results reflect what I think about my work, how can it not? I do something that I impress myself with, only to get shot down for all my effort.

And I know, unfortunately, that is the way of the art world, but it's still depressing and disapointing.

Even if you don't enter your idea into a challenge you can still post in the forums for feedback and I hope you do (either way). One good thing about the forums you can post more than one to show different angles, perspectives etc.

I do plan on taking the shot anyway, but now I don't know what to do for the challenge if I don't use it.

grrrrrr

In this age, pretty much everythings already been done. Just do it your way, and do it better ;-)
Err..atleast do it your way.

It's bound to happen to everyone eventually.

Note: what is 'inspiration' if it's not feeding off the work of others?

there's inspiration, and then there's theft. I just don't want to be accused of the latter.

Just do it. It's more important to go through the exercise and learn from it. Just about everything has been done somewhere, but that doesn't mean it's inappropriate to learn by reinterpreting another idea.

Just my own opinion on this, but ethics in not defined by what others thing of you -- but by what you think of yourself.

Come on, everybody says that! ;-)

Seriously, just take the shot and do the best you can with it. Clearly it's a good idea if one of the masters did it too. If you want to indicate in your title that you didn't copy that shot, people might vote it higher, but it's realy not necessary.

DPC is a great site, but it's just a small part of the photography world. If the shot comes out well, you should be able to get lots of mileage out of it. Good luck!

Noooo don't do that. I, and many others, hate titles which explain stuff, like {NO EDITS!!!} or {this is straight out the camera!!!!11} and they totally ruin the presentation of the photo. I will mark a photo down for a title like this. Also, by saying that you didnt copy a certain image, people will know that you saw it and are MORE likely to thjink you copied it. If you don't mention it then it might not even cross some people's minds that you copied it.

Maybe just a bit depressed ... ... it's autumn now.
I understand you well , I finally have decided to not participate in the Part challenge , I was happy when I read it but with the cold or flu (still not sure),all my ideas seem bad to me now.
So go ahead , you have the idea , try to do your best , play with the angles , lights and so...
Good luck !

Take the shot and add a new twist.

Don't put so much stock into what people think, yes it's nice to hear from someone "Oh that's a nice picture"...but you have to keep on shooting stuff to get better, and one way is to get ideas from stuff other people have done, it's a learning experience...
If you make a nice picture you'll get a decent score, but with that score and five bucks you can get a frappuccino at starbucks ;>)
This site is great for learning and new ideas, but don't take the comments and scores so hard, just try to learn from them...YOU have to be happy with your photos...
Just keep on shooting and learning...
