I've just recieved a comment for my "Wacky Foods" submission with only two words, neither of which were helpful! "too girly" it said. What kind of constructive art criticism is that??? It was a naff photo submitted purely cos I wanted to enter a challenge (I haven't for ages). I agree with the others who've commented but that was just pointless. I've signed up to learn techniques and to have people critique my work so I can improve it. A comment like this is just a waste of space.

Actually, it's a comment I find interesting and would have marked helpful, were it one I received myself.

Some images could certainly be argued to have a masculine or feminine style, according to the stereotypical concepts of masculinity and femininity.

I have no idea whether the most recent studies show that there is a notable difference between styles and preferences between genders or that there is not a difference and that the concepts are simply a throwback to assumptions from times gone by.

Whatever the case is, it's true to say that the concepts of masculine and feminine do exist in current thought.

I think it's fair to assume that "girly" is being used to imply a feminine style.

So, with that in mind, I'd read the comment as shorthand from the reader that a) that he/ she finds your particular styling rather feminine and that b) he/ she has a preference for simpler, more "masculine" styles.

As to what this person means by feminine or "girly", I can't comment as I haven't seen your image, but perhaps it's somewhat frilly or fussy, perhaps it's rather pink. Rightly or wrongly these things are still associated with gender.

Anyway, I'd say the comment is a useful indication of WHY one voter doesn't care for your image.

EDIT to correct typo.

A 2-word comment like "too girly" is a thousand times better than "Nice shot" or "Good Work" or "Not Good" - granted, all of those comments are nice to receive, even the bad one, but they don't give a shred of insight into taking better photographs. At least the comment you received showed what one person on the site felt was a short coming, and gave you something to think about when considering your next entry.

Well, the input box says Comments. Not technical insights.
