I am trying to improve the backgrounds in my still life photos.
For example:

How can I get a better black background?
Or a white one?
What material should I use?

for black - move it farther away from the subject, and be sure you light isn't hitting the material.

i have gotten a black background from green in this manner - be sure to meter for the subject and not the background./

for white - set a custom white balance using a shot of the white material lit by the lighting you plan on using for the shot - then overexpose 1/3- 2/3 stops. if it still isn't white enough - it can usually be tuned up in an image editor afterwards.

i have had decent results doing it this way.
i use a scrap piece of matte board ( black on one side, white on the other ) for most of my studio type shots. i keep it as far away from the subject as i can
