I'm not saying that you should score high because of a poorly executed though time intesive shot. I'm saying you shouldn't say that there was no effort involved, or little effort - when you don't know.

I learned a long time ago, that effort doesn't merit a higher score. I have plenty of entries in which I put a lot of effort into the shot, but received an average score. What makes a good score, as we all know, is well executed, on theme shots.

Then, I had to drive (last minute) in a rain storm from a tropical storm to the place where I could achieve the shot. So saying that you couldn't score me above a 7 - even knowing that you don't know what my shot was - saying that there was little effort, when you don't know what the effort was, is wrong.

I too have received nothing but good comments though my score is low. If you don't like my shot, tell me why.

Some concepts are quite good, but as usual many of the suffer from the dreaded "snapshot syndrome". It is not enough to have a great idea, people need to work harder on it. Sometimes I just wonder if people were drunk or something when the took some of the pictures.
I am not innocent of "snapshooting", some of my entries make me bow my head in shame.
I've think I've learned the hard way, that a photograph is mostly about lightning. Just take a look at the challenge archive, almost every photo in the top three have great lightning.
And if you are going to use backgrounds, please buy some wrapping paper or cloths, a crumpled bedsheet is not very good background. :)

I agree with this. Just because a shot isn't "an immaculate studio shot" it doesn't automatically mean that little effort was put into its execution.

I agree with you guys, I think that even though I gave low scores this time, I am only doing it based on what I see on the picture, I cannot see the effort that went into the picture and I can't realy make any professional judging becouse I don't have any professional experience.

My experience is this website and the pictures I have studied are in this site.

My opinion on this challenge is that it is faaar beyond par... I gave a few good scores but I didnt give many. Becouse I don't think they are good enough. There are a few good, but compared to the "Touch" or "Complexity" challenge, I think those are better then the current one

Well, if one of the ones raised, was mine, I appreciate it. If you didn't like it - I hope to find out why. Thanks on behalf of everyone for taking the time. I surprised myself by commenting on 33 images last night. go me!

Really? I thought that "Touch" was the sub-par effort. Lot's of pictures of fingers against glass or mirrors, but nothing to make me feel what the person was touching. My only real problem with THIS challenge, is that there's a lot of poorly focused shots, and a lot of gummy bears and worms. Not that there aren't a lot of water drops out there, but gummy foods just seem like a short-cut to me.

Again, I'm sorry to say, but effort doesn't equal scoring higher just because it had more effort put into it. A high effort poorly shot image is worth the same score as a poor shot image with no effort. I judge based upon image quality, not effort.

I think the best challenges are often the "concept" ones - using a certain technique or concept of photography. The challenges that are defined by a thing or "the what" seem to produce the most disappointing results IMHO. I look forward to more challenges involving photogrpahy concepts and not a particular type of subject.

I agree...

Here's my voting:
10: none 9: none 8: none 7: 9 6: 56 5: 80 4: none 3: 8 2: none 1: none
- The better ones got 7s, ok's 6s, bland shots 5s, insects 3s. Zero wow shots in this challenge.
- Dont know why I entered at all, though.. by my own voting it would have just qualified for my 5 vote.
- sorry, I DONT eat insects, and its not wacky for me.. its YUCK, disgusting.

I think I voted much higher in touch

Some good ideas.
A lot of poorly executed shots I agree. Poor quality.
My entry was a new lighting technique for me. I'm pleased with how I'm doing for my first time trying it.

That seems harsh...well, the part about the insects, anyway. I, too, DO NOT eat insects, nor do I eat many of the other things shot in this challenge (like bananas and tomatoes), but I try to see past my personal culinary habits when assessing the photographic prowess of others. If a photo turns your stomach, that's a pretty powerful photo.

Still, part of this site is that personal opinion is paramount. If you hate the color blue, give every photo with blue in it a 1. If you think anything with a baby or a flower is a masterpiece, then by all means vote 10! Just don't be upset when your photo is treated to the same type of criticism by others with certainly different viewpoints than your own.

"anything with a baby or a flower is a masterpiece" that's just too funny.

Voting aside, shooting disgusting subjects has a very real drawback- you can't eat your props. Anybody for a dessert challnege? ;-)

It does seem harsh to me as well. I have yet to vote on one challenge that I couldn't find a least one 10 and a couple of 9s. I certainly feel they are here in this challenge as well.
09/29/2004 03:19:43 PM · #45
I actualy have 2 10's and 3 9's....more than my usual.

I think we need to get our dictionaries out again. What does "Wacky" mean anyway? (this was probably discussed before, but I can't visit this site everyday like some) My dictionary says "...slangExtremely irrational or erratic; crazy." This doesn't mean "funny", or "cute", but maybe more like "anything off the wall". When the challenge description says "tasteful", I took it to mean the photographic technique was to be "tasteful", not the food being photographed. Oh well, I see most are looking for something run of the mill as usual. My photo has never gotten so many comments (despite the sub 5 score). They are quite humorous, some even saying I don't "meet the challenge" (as if that is a surprise). I hope I didn't make anybody throw up:)

I suspect, that a "dessert" challenge will get even more "iffy" results. Or, rather - odd extrapolations as to what constitutes a dessert. I suspect a lot of nude photography. Predominantly of the female figure.

I chose to vote with a lot of latitude on the subjectmatter...since "wacky" can mean so many things... But if a shot it technically poor, like so many in this challenge....it will get scored low..regardless of subjectmatter.

Nah.. its just my voting style.. if I find a photograph repulsive, I vote it down.. doesnt matter if it was 'technically perfect'.

I'm a vegetarian.. doesnt mean that I'd vote down meat shots. However, I do find < edited due to voting in progress > extremely disgusting.
