I've always shot in RAW but recently picked up my husband's camera and shot a few pics of him and our Great Pynenees. I made overall adjustments to level and curves and then did local adjustments with curves to the shadows on Jeff. The pics came out with kind of blotchy redness on his skin. How much adjustment can be done to a JPEG without making it look wierd? Or does it depend on the size of the file for how it comes out? Thanks!

i guess it really depends on the over all image quality of the image you were editing.
I shoot JPG and never have a problem editing the photo, unless it is under or over exposed way too much

If it was a quality JPG to start with, there should not have been a problem. Unless.... You saved as a JPG and reloaded several times during the editing process.
If your editing progam did not change the JPG to a lossless format and your worked on it several times, then the artifacts of JPG compression became compounded. When I work on pictures, the first thing I do is to save them, as Photshop's natve format. That way I can work on them in several sessions if needed.

| Your reference to the shadows on his face makes me think this is was a pretty noisy image to start with. Since you're accustomed to the output of a DSLR, a file from a small-sensor cam is bound to look noisy. Was the cam set to auto (did it perhaps bump pu the ISO)? |

It was set on auto so that might be it. It was kind of wierd though in that the color seemed blotchy just on his skin. If someone would be so kind as to tell me how to get a picture on this screen, I'll post it so you can have a look. Thanks!
