Thanks to everyone for giving me suggestions for my black/white nude with tattoo photo. I reshot tonight and I'm interested to hear the commentary. I like this new pose better. I think it's more interesting to look at. I also like how the shadow in the spine and the shadow of the buttocks seem to point toward the tattoo. Again, it's grainy, but I like grain. Although, if I hear from many of you that you find it distracting, I may have to rethink.

This is the original:

Definitely: shot #2 is a stronger comp but one very minor point. I would have the left foot extended out just a bit more to avoid the sharp cut-off. In other words, adjust foot to show a little more of the back of the joint right behind the knee.

I took the plunge and became an actual member. For anyone who's interested, I put some of my other shots in my portfolio. Comments there are always welcome too. It's been about two years since I picked up a camera, so I'm getting my feet wet all over again. Feels good to break out the old studio equipment. :-)

Thanks again all!

Very nice. I also really like your American Beauty-ish shot in your portfolio.

Maybe I'm just not seeing it, but I'm trying to figure out what the tattoo is a picture of. Is the tattoo a Chinese character? If so, do you know its meaning?

Heather,
I do prefer the second shot in terms of the background, but i think the sheets in the first and the depth and feel of the shadows in the first are more appealing. It looks like you used a flash here and the subject is lacking depth and shadows.

Don't get me wrong, it'd a very nice improvement, I just think you should keep playing with it. Good stuff, keep it up!

It means 'hope'.

Skylen - Koriyama was kind enough to translate the Japanese character on her back as "hope."

Animes2k - yep, it's flash... studio lighting with an umbrella to diffuse the light. The first shot was natural light. The weird thing is that the shots always look really good on the LCD screen, but when I get them on my computer they are very dark and many of the tones are gone. Time to break out the manual! :-)

Oops! Koriyama beat me to the post! :-) Thanks again!
