I have a really old Canon EF 35-80mm 4-5.6 lens who's coating is absolutely horrible. It's hazy and just plain worn away. I'm thinking I might be able to salvage a little use if I can manage to remove the coating. I read somewhere that leaving it in acetone overnight does the trick.

Has anyone tried this?

And more importantly, does any know of any other methods to remove the coating? I'm trying to keep it nice and cheap. ;)

The majority of lens coatings are vapor deposited magnesium flouride which is insoluble in acetone.
But the cements used to glue lenses together is soluble in acetone and will craze between the lenses.
Don't use acetone. The lens coating can be polished off the glass using cerium oxide, but that is a tedious process at best.
Sounds as if this lens has been abused and may be beyond economic repair.
