I've noticed this technique has been used quite a bit. Does it work well and does anyone here have experience with using a stocking over their flash or is it better to invest the $50 (Aus) on a Stofen omni bounce or similar?

doesnt cost much to try it out. What happens with different colored stockings? Hmmm..ive never heard of this technique...but now im curious.

If you think of how powerful a flash is, I guess a stocking may be too thin? Sto-fen omni-bounces are surprisingly thick (1mm plastic) and opaque (60-70% maybe?), I found.

I used a stocking over both the flash and the lens for photo of my mother's dog. In photoshop, some tone curving was necessary.

(edited: I've just renewed my membership and can put thumbnails in threads. Yipeee!)

All I can say...Crystal Light plastic container! It is a whitish clear plastic. I have 2 (one with the top cut out to experiment with) and they work pretty damn good. And shooting in RAW helps with the balance if needed. But the cans of course diffuse the light MUCH better.

As a real Life POSER, I bought the pocket bouncer @ 35$....does the exact same job as the sock...but with the added advantge of having costs 35 times as much.....
