Sounds like you're gonna have a lot of fun, 60mm of focus distance at 105mm focus range! Let us know when you get some pics.

Thanks Ramon. I am downloading just a few snaps. Nothing special just something to test the lense.

I picked up the Sigma 105mmF/2.8Macro just this past week and was considering the nikkor but a couple of reviews and the price lead me to the Sigma.
I would really like to see some pics from the Nikkor please post them 1:1 no cropping. Here are mine macro test shots

Sure will Dark rider. May have to email you to tell you when they are posted. I am going to take some tomorrow. I was looking at the sigma as well, then a friend of mine sold me his lense for the price of the Sigma. He only used it 3 or 4 times. He just was not using it and gave me a break on the price. I dont think there is much difference between the two in terms of image quality. I will be sure to let you know when the photos are posted.

Have fun! I have the Sigma macro lens, probably my favourite lens.
Played around with it last night in fact - duct taped my old Helios 50mm lens in reverse on the end to see what it could do. Not exactly artistic or technically sound but a fun experiment nevertheless.

Hey Brian, I have seen other people doing this. So you just put the other lense in front of the macro and focus using manual focusing? What kind of magnification do you get? The eyes are amazing. !!!! |

Does anyone know if teleconverters work on macro lenses to increase the magnification??

Yea, you put the lens in reverse in front of the macro. And actually, if you take any of your lenses, reverse them, and hold them in front of the body they should act like macro lenses.
You can find couplers that do this more "professionally" than duct tape, you can also use entension tubes between the lens and body or macro lens and 50mm.
Teleconverters also work. Note that, any of these methods for getting closer to your subject will shorten your DOF and decrease the amount of total light reaching the sensor. |

No problem, I'm still learning all the ins and outs of macro. I'm sure Jacko knows a ton more about the subject than I do. |

Yes, they do. A 1.4x teleconverter will take you up to 1.4:1 on a lens that normally maxes out at 1:1. |

Same as normal teleconverter application, 1 stop for 1.4x, 2 stops for 2.0x converters.
BTW, for those wondering about the reversed lens scenario, the following two photos are my "mirrors" submission, and the setup (minus the flash, which was hand-held. The lenses are the Canon 100/2.8 Macro with the Canon 50/1.4 reversed. The horizontal FoV was 10mm (2.16x magnification) and this is cropped significantly from that. He's about 6mm (1/4 inch) long total.
edit: oops, screwed up the second thumb...
