Must be a point and shoot (non-SLR)... (of course, I just bought a dSLR, but, I can always borrow my son's camera.)

Now thats what I'm talking about.

I'd like to see an open challenge with only ribbon winners allowed to vote :-)

How about this... Every week have and added challenge that is camera specific. In other words one week there would be a challenge for all D70 users and then the next would be finepix S7000 etc. And only members who do not have those cameras can vote. This way we can find out who is the best photographer for each class of camera. Lets be honest, with all things equal a P&S can never compete with a high end DSLR. I would also like to see an overall ranking system that declares a grand champion at the end of the year, and then we start all over again.

you have a very strange name- but some very lucid ideas. I hope someone on sc looks at this thread adn contemplates your suggestions.

It would be great if there could be a "winner" or final ranking fror 2004, and then we move on, almost virginally, into a the next year, hopes renewed.

They're only tools. I'm still finding it hard to beat the scores I got with my Optio S last year. P&Ss can do some things better, like deep dof and macros. Also, they can get the shots that pros would miss if they left their 'serious' kit at home. Apart from some specialist shots using special lenses... or very high ISO shots, I would say that a good photographer would get similar results from a P&S as they would from a DSLR. You just have to work harder with a P&S, and be reasonably good with PS.

MMmm I like that idea but how about we expand on that.
Why not have a 1st 2nd and 3rd place getter within a challenge for each camera. Kinda mini challenge within a challenge. That would offer a lot of satisfaction to a lot of people. Maybe it could be a button rather than a ribbon or something..

It might be a nightmare to set up though.

we've all heard it before-
"you have expensive cookware- you must be a good chef" and that whole line of bull shit from falsely modest photogs who want to take all the credit and fancy themselves Ansel adams junior and they could take masterpieces with a kodak 112 film little shooter. But ....
it might be nice to see a challenge for each camera- or the "grand champion of the camera/brand competition" That way those people with $5000 rigs and studios and models and big dollar postprocessing can test their ability and not rely solely on their hardware. They may do well adn win despite themselves and prove themselves modern day Dorothea Langes- or they may feel cold and naked without their big glass and hulking penis-replacing slr. Think of it as "stock car racing" for cameras.

How about a challenge for NonRibbon Winners? -- Just something to eliminate the few who always "take the cake" with their talent & eye...Maybe even only allow ribbon winners to vote on non-winning contestants?

The equipment challenge sure sounds like a "poor workman always blames his tools" excuse challenge...I want a DSLR BAD, but I still shoot with my 3.2 nikon 3200

Um...I guess it depends on the P&S. I look forward to getting my dslr (the digital rebel has been shipped!) because I hate the in-camera processing my little A40 does. The sharpening and colour saturation don't allow me to do any effective post-processing in some situations.

Also, it takes forever to focus and shoot. It doesn't have any aperture-priority OR SS-priority. In fact, the manual mode only allows me to choose between two f-stops selected by the camera.

Not to mention the lack of manual focus, coupled with the awful AF mode.

I love my point and shoot a lot and it's great in certain situations, but I'm drooling at the thought of the fun I will have getting back into SLR photography.
Yes, they're just tools, but at least with the rebel I'll get to use those tools instead of having the work done for me!
