I was wondering whether the new Canon EF-S lenses would fit onto the 10D, or are they made exclusively for the 300D and 20D? I read something about these lenses fitting deeper into the camera, possibly damaging the mirror. Does this hold for the 10D also?

OK, thanks. Too bad, the new EF-S lenses seemed like a good deal for starter lenses, but only for 300D and 20D owners, then.

Yes, that's likely what Canon intended these for. Bear in mind though that someone starting with a new DSLR will be an intermediate user fairly quickly...

If I am not mistaken, the EF-S lenses only fit the 300D and the 20D.

seems canon is just testing this new mount out.
only a couple lenses - started with 300d, and now testing on the richer folks as well.

i do wonder if the new EF-S is any better quality than the 18-55mm EF-S

There is a tab on the EF-S lenes that prevents them from being installed on a 10D or other EF mount camera. There are some who have removed the tab on EF-S lenses so that they will fit on EF mount cameras. It's definitely a "proceed at your own peril" situation as you risk damaging the camera and I highly doubt that such damage will be covered by the warranty.

A review I read, DPReview I think it was, seemed to give the 17-85mm one the thumbs up.

I do not remember all the details but one thing I recall, which is what really appealed to me, was that the reviewer thought that the 20D/ 17-85mm combination was good enough to make it a single lens/body kit to take on vacation.

I admit that I like the idea of being able to travel with just body/1 lens and be able to cope with a wide variety of situations.

I will be picking up my 17-85 either today or tomorrow .... and if I had a body to go with it I'd be really excited *laugh*

Well judging by my "kit" lens... The EF-s range is pretty crappy...at least for my experience with the 18-55. I was told it was an attempt to create a short boby series to rival with the massively popular series from Tamron.

I think the 18-55 isn't very representative of the newer EF-S lenses. For a start they're significantly more expensive, and much better quality.

I sure hope so! but I have not seen or used the newer EF-s...and will stick to L-glass.

Despite a thumbs up from DPReview I can't see anyong forking out the bucks for the 17-85. The Tamron 28-75 sells for considerably less, is faster at f 2.8, and is widely tested and reviewed, known to be a very high quality lens, and it fits all the Canon DSLRs. The 17-85 is a more expensive, relative unknown alternative that will have less resale value because of a more limited number of potential buyers.
That said, the new 10-22 is interesting but kind of expensive, hope it gets reviewed soon.
